Opinions wanted on siding options!

Hi, we are going to be redoing the front siding on our house as there is rot, focusing on the main area and will have the garage match in time. We did get some quotes from siding companies to do the whole house but we're going to dig in and do it ourselves!

We'd love to get some opinions on siding choices, here are our current options:

Do 12" horizontal siding and line up with the visible horizontal siding that you can see in the picture. The hidden side of the house has misaligned siding from the rest of the house so we'd eventually replace it to match up.
Main body of house in shake, peak in board and batten
Main body of house in board and batten, peak in shake
Color suggestions! Darker green for main body and sage green for peak? or Sage green for main body and beige for peak? Soffit and fascia are a cream/off-white color.

We are also looking at replacing the the brick with stone eventually and bringing it over to the front of the garage.

I'd love to hear your combinations and opinions and I'm open to different colors as well as we are planning on painting the house to match what we do in the front. Also open to any suggestions regarding siding brands and tips and tricks in siding a house! We have been watching lots of YouTube videos.

I might consider something like this. Use a smooth panel above and below the windows, and match the existing lap siding between them.

Thanks for your input! I failed to mention that we will be removing the 4x4 vertical boards on the house so we're really starting from scratch.

I like option 2 as well. I think with the two different materials (stone and horizontal siding), adding a third will make it too busy. Also, it would draw attention to the garage which most of us try to hide :). I would also ask your architect/designer about the eave returns on the front of the garage. It looks like what some of the Getting your House Right books call lamb chop or something like that! I would prefer a flush eave on the front of the garage - something like this. I kept thinking about your post because I knew that I had several magazine pics and articles with your style of house saved in my "file", I just had to find them. (It's a huge file that annoys my DH! LOL! And I love stone homes too.) I found the one in particular that I thought might be what your are looking for. It was a feature in Southern Living about a couple in Charleston WV that wanted a new home with old charm. Guess who their architect was?...Russell Versaci! Their home was featured in the Sept. 2006 issue. If you go to his website, it is the one named "Wolf Pen House". I'm sure you've seen it. I found another pic of a home that might help a little. It is from Eldorado Stone. I'll post the link. It is the home with the Veneto Fieldstone--if you only look at the examples in the right column, it is the 4th one down, with white dormers. I think it is a beautiful home. I second Worthy's opinion...I love the stone on the main body. Whatever you decide it will be gorgeous! Good luck! Your link for more pictures does not work for me. I do like the glass backsplash tiles you are considering. I also like the small dark square tiles you show at the bottom. They relate well to the dark speckles in your granite and would look good with rubbed bronze fixtures. If you are going to trim the glass tiles I think you should use those dark square tiles on both the top and bottom of the glass tiles instead of the lighter squares in the picture above.

livingreen2013- I don't think there are any special problems with B&B siding, as with any installation, it's all about materials, preparation, installation and maintenance. I love B&B, but it is a very specific and casual look. We considered it for our house, but decided we wanted the eye to be drawn to the horizontal, so went with that. We also considered using cedar fish scale or this great, funky wavy siding in certain places, but to be brutally honest, we didn't have the $$, so went with plain Hardiboard. Your home is much larger, so I think you could go busier and add some interest without it seeming too busy. I also think the windows on the back don't meld well with the rest of the house, but YMMV. Here is a pic of our house, not dissimilar to yours (albeit a lot smaller and no attached garage). I would not be afraid to go bold with color too, I think a strong color or strong contrast between windows, trim and house would look great on your house, but I love color, again, YMMV. Hi there. I'd caution away from shakes or other gable accents - you have a classic modern house, for better or for worse, and it's best to dance with the one who brung you. I suggest emphasizing the horizontality of the cantilevered 2nd floor by running heavy trim at head and sill of window continuously around the sides of the house, infilling between them with a fine-grained vertical siding with bevelled joints (not board/batten), and running horizontal siding above & below that zone. I'd also remove the distractions of the basement hodge-podge brick by staining it a charcoal grey or other darker tint.

Thank you so much! We are looking at replacing the brick with stone and filling in above the lower windows. I did a rough mock-up of it; the program had few options for vertical siding and I'm not sold on the colors.

I would simplify the siding with all board and batten painted in all white or gray from the brick with white trim, but space the battens wider than they are now.

I would keep the brick. Personally, I think manufactured stone looks fake.

Thanks for your input! Since we are doing it ourselves we have been leaning toward board and batten on the whole front, now trying to figure out what spacing to put on the board and batten between the boards. We are removing the vertical boards on either side of the window as they are not secured well. If and when we do replace the brick with stone, we would use real stone and probably hire someone to install it. Keeping the brick for now, just trying to replace the rot before winter!
