Medallion/Schuler Cappuccino Cabinet Finish?

I am planning to purchase Schuler branded cabinets which are also Medallion. I like the Cappuccino finish but I'm struggling between the Cherry and Alder wood options. The Alder has a prettier caramel like tone IMHO but will look more rustic with the knots in the wood. The Cherry has a pretty grain but I'm nervous about the cabinets becoming pink or reddish because of the lighter stain color over time. I've tried to search for images but the it's hard to get an accurate idea when the tone varies so much from kitchen to kitchen. Has anyone installed Cappuccino (preferably with Burnt Sienna glaze) stained cabinets? Would you be willing to share pictures? Thanks!!!

Most people who get cherry wood do better to leave it unstained with a clear coat only. it will darken significantly during the first 6 months to a beautiful, natural color. Alder is much softer than cherry, so you'll get more dents and dings in the wood over time. You'd really need to like the rustic look to go with alder wood, and some people do. Alder is sometimes called the cheaper choice to cherry since both woods look so similar. Alder will not naturally darken like cherry will, though. I'd go with the cherry and leave it unstained. Cherry itself is actually quite soft, so you'll need to be careful with it to avoid premature dings and dents. Alder is much softer. Woods like oak and hickory are the hard ones.

Perhaps things have changed since we ordered our cabinets, but at that time there was no option, no door style, nor finish offered by Medallion that we couldnÂt get in Schuler from Lowes. This included solid, not veneered, slab doors. The names were different, but the product was the same. The problem, as I saw it, was that not all the KDÂs at Lowes knew enough about the Schuler line to price out the various options. Sometimes it took a call by the KD direct to the factory to get clarity. In the end we went with a raised panel, but we did get a price for the solid flat panel option. At the same time, we had issues with local Medallion dealers, some of whom would only quote an installed price, and one who tried to hide the fact that they were quoting on MDF boxes with laminate ends. At any rate, our Schuler cabinets were delivered on a Medallion delivery truck along with other customerÂs orders of Medallion cabinets. As far as I could tell the only difference was the name. The driver told us they came from the same factory and were made on the same lines. As far as the 100% deposit goes, we used a Lowes "project card." We didn't actually have to pay a dime for six months with no interest. By that time our project was completed, and we paid it all off. We didn't have any disputes, so I can't say what remedy one would have should they arise. In essence we put zero down.

The paint primer etc are part of the entire 12 step finishing system, not the touch up kit. I ordered this in order to add my own onlays, corbels etc in the oyster Medallion finish. The touch up kit is a wax crayon in a package and a paint pen used for filling nail holes, small nicks. You wouldn't need all the other stuff unless you were completely finishing a piece of molding or something. I am surprised it came with your order. Mine was extra money and was added to my cabinet order at my request.

Kompy the Wheat Glazed looks gorgeous! Definately better than just the wheat! You may remember the issues I had with my Medallion Wheat cabinets... now I really wish I had gone with the glaze. marcy - I had horrible sapwood in my wheat cabinets. I do not recommend the wheat without the glaze. The wheat is a very light, almost natural stain, the sapwood is very pronounced. You can see how light they were in this photo: You can really see the sapwood once the wood darkens: The wheat has settled into a nice brownish red, but we had to replace all of the doors above (except the left door above the fridge - I kinda liked that one) due to sapwood.

For one thing, I ordered inset cabinetry. Most of the doors have to be carefully opened and closed together or they knock into eachother and won't close. Decora rep said "thats a risk with inset cabinets." This photo represents another problem that has appeared in a few places of my kitchen. I am grinning and bearing these cabinets until one day when I can justify replacing them! I have a bathroom with Omega cabinetry that has been nothing but beautiful and functional since day 1.

I don't know if the OP will get back to you, but since I wrote the above comment, I have installed clear coated cherry in my own kitchen, and the color is a lovely neutral brown. Alder I think tends to skew more yellow. Natural wood tones are coming back into vogue as far as trends are concerned, but the dark stains not so much. Glazes are the domain of a bygone era as far as I have been able to tell. Unless you want to replicate a country, early-aughts look, I would skip the glaze. If you like it on its own, great, but remember that cabinetry companies may be still offering the same finishes they have for a couple of decades which may not necessarily translate to a look that has longevity for a new installation.

@Aglitter, thank you for the feedback! I am leaning towards getting the Medallion Cappuccino in Cherry, which is a very mild/neutral stain. My only concern is how it will age. I have no experience with cherry, and I would hate to unexpectedly have red cabinets. Do you have pictures of the cherry you installed?

This is my cherry in natural sunlight after about a year installed. The only reason you would stain cherry is if it isn't a higher quality of cherry wood and you want to disguise color variations. Cherry, unstained with a clear coat, is one of the most beautiful naturally colored woods you could select. Fine woodworkers don't touch cherry with any stain.
