I like the look of having a rug, but given this is a walk-through area, you'll have to be careful that the rug doesn't encroach on walk-way (trip hazard) but at the same time fits under the chairs such that they can be pulled out and still on rug. I'm not sure that a rug is possible.

I agree with Gcubed. Placing a rug there will interfere with the walk-way.

Could the table be turned the other way? Maybe that would give you the clearance you need.

A low pile rug shouldn’t be much of a tripped hazard. You can purchase and see if it’s a problem and return if it is.

I don't think you'd want to be walking on the edges of the rug, or have the rug cover too far toward the wall. You can add color or pattern in the chair cushions if you're looking for more interest.
