what to do with this dead space

we have this blank area at the side of our house. it's just where the air conditioners hide and the grass dies because it gets massive amounts of sun. I want to put some plants here and make it look less terrible. I would love to add some fruit trees like a pomegranate or black berries or something but the space is pretty limited. we also get snakes and have to worry about the foundation not moving. please help. I also want to hide that grey foundation cement at the bottom. we live in Texas though and this side of the house gets full sun.

Comments (9)My non-designer drive-by opinions: The counter sticking out under the garage works if there is counter to each side of it (i.e. looks like a stretch of counter with cabinetry sitting on top of it in one place). The way yours is, I think will look a little odd. I recommend filling that gap with a little trim piece painted to match the cabinetry. The refrigerator doors need to be able to open the whole way so you can remove the drawers, so yes, I think this will bug you. It would bug me, at least. I believe that a cabinet designer would normally put a small filler piece to the left of the fridge so it wouldn't be right up against that protruding piece of drywall around the doorframe. It is probably a bit late to reframe that bit of drywall or rebuild the cabinets, but I think options are: 1) reframe the drywall or rebuild the cabinets anyway (or shift the cabinets to the right if there's room), 2) pull out the cabinets to the same level as the drywall (and the refrigerator with them of course), 3) exchange the FD fridge for a single-door one with hinges on the right, 4) leave all the cabinetry as it is and pull the fridge out far enough for the doors to clear. The easiest option of course would be #4 with #3 a close second... depends on whether you dislike seeing a strip of refrigerator side sticking out and whether a single-door fridge with right hinges would work in your layout....See MoreWhat to do with this dead space.
Comments (16)There is nothing wrong with leaving it empty if it isn't well situated to serve function and you have all the space you need elsewhere. Comments (22)So, the breezeway originally was the entire depth of the house, but the back end is now laundry/enclosed area? I think screening the front would be nice, especially if you have a nice view out front. We had a breezeway and they made the front part a bedroom and the back a mudroom/passage to the kitchen. They kept the windows and door across the front and people do mistake that door for the front entrance, but what can you do? I'm a porch person, so I say go for the breezeway. We would have liked to revert, but ours is a very large bedroom with very large closet (attached to HVAC) and it would make the house three bedrooms, instead of four. Comments (6)Thank you all SO much! Really wonderful to read your suggestions and get input. Much appreciated. And makes me feel there is potential for this space. I never considered a bigger rug, but will do so now as that seems to be a repeated suggestion. We will also take another look at the the height of that mirror on the side wall (above the mantel is a actually a large framed photo that I blacked out for this post). We did experiment with turning the dining table the other way, but it didn't feel right and seemed to block the openness of the sliding doors. And I was leaning towards an upholstered bench behind the couch (for a casual spot to sit with the added bonus of storage for blankets inside), but perhaps that would be odd? Again, thank you all.
