Help/Advice on Coffered Ceiling installation
Comments (4)IMHO, I don't like the idea of a larger center box. I think it will make the room look out of proportion, unless possibly you had a table or island centered under the large box. If it were me I would use 2 beams in the long direction and 3 in the short direction. That would give you boxes that are almost square (5'x5'4"+ from the center line of the beams) which I think looks better. A rough way to see what each layout looks like is to take some rolls of paper, cut them to width, and use stick pins to lay them out on the ceiling. You won't get the depth but it will show you which pattern looks best....See MoreCoffered ceiling off center
Comments (25)Hi everyone! Sorry it took so long to respond! Yes, the original plan called for beams to "create" a space where the coffered portion would be. The room is open to the kitchen eating area, a walkway, stairs, and the kitchen. So the purpose of the ceiling was to sort of create a unique space. Does that make sense? The builder responded to my concerns acknowledging that yes this is different than what the plan called for but "the room looks bigger this way". I'm thinking he's trying to find a silver lining to see if I would like it and not ask him to redo it. I am going to ask him to redo it according to the plan which would make it centered with the fireplace. Thanks all for your input!!...See MoreSpace lights to the center of the room or fireplace/TV?
Comments (11)We’ve got a similar issue but it involves a bigger area including the kitchen island. Our fireplace is centered with the living wall but all of the ceiling can lights are centered with the whole room. To add to the issue, we’re also going to have a ceiling fan in the living area. My thought is to remove the center can in front of the fireplace and then shift the two cans closest to the patio wall over to center with the built in on the right side. But then how to hang ceiling fan? Will it look weird if centered with the living area as opposed to the whole room? Ugh!!...See MoreIs it a faux pas to mix exposed beams and coffered ceilings?
Comments (32)I mis-spoke. Gehry is a deconstructivist. The 1973 Robarts Library in downtown Toronto is a brutalist masterpiece, though now marred by a recent glasshouse thing on one side.Robarts Library expansion.
