I am new and have no idea where to start-and I have LOTS of ants
Comments (3)Ants are an unsolvable problem, spraying only kills workers, and then you can not eat your crops. I was told to buy a bait to have the workers take back to the colony to feed the queen. No queen equals no workers. I bought every type of bait on the market and the ants would not touch it. They were too smart. If someone knows a cure for ants please post that. Try the soil forum, and add lots of compost. It costs a lot of money to buy a lot of compost and add it. It's a huge investment, but there is not much that can be done about the cost of it. Making compost takes time and also money for bins or other products to add to compost mainly browns or else you need lots of leaves. I have page up on my website about composting, if you want to read all my suggestions. Click on the soil link. Comments (2)David, I had going a very long post of recommendation when the electricity went blip and I lost it all...damn. Well, here goes again...start with a "business plan" outlining all the important parts of the project and a timeline for completing steps to completion. Some questions for you to consider: Who is doing the work? The site has to be cleared of trash, the soil tested for heavy metals and toxins, and the garden units laid out and generally prepped with available potable water for garden plots and gardeners. Who are your gardeners? Have you polled the neighbors, local religious and ethnic centers? Will you be charging them for their plots? What are their responsibilities to the garden and to each other? How will you get liability insurance (Your property owner probably won't let you run a community garden without insurance unless you can get the city park's department or public works to sponsor the project). An association with a local agency might give you more for the invested buck. What are your security needs for the garden and the gardeners? Fencing is a minimum. Have you got sponsors to help pay for preparation, layout, tools and other expenses? The garden ought to have sets of simple tools and a safe storage place. Try to interest local houses of worship, ethnic clubs, ethnic grocers, local botanical and garden clubs (check with Brooklyn Botanical Garden and New York Botanic Garden -- the first publishes little gardening books including one I think on community gardens. There are already a large number of community gardens in the NY Metropolitan area for you to visit and talk about your vision. Good luck, hope this helps, Marshall...See MoreHelp, my colors are all off and I don't want to start over.
Comments (55)Nosoccermom, I try to shop family-owned and local whenever possible. The table was purchased at a local New England furniture store called Circle Furniture. The table is 100 yr reclaimed chestnut from Vermont. I believe the manufacturer produces furniture and taps maple trees for syrup. Fun, huh? Here is the link. We went with painted black apron and legs: http://www.circlefurniture.com/products/dining/dining-tables/recalimed-dining...See MoreI really want to update my kitchen
Comments (10)Can you please show better photos of the kitchen? I'm not sure white or gray will work with your counters and backsplash-but then I can't really see them, so might be mistaken. Notice that your dream kitchen are not only color X (or X and Y, given they are two-toned)..they're also pretty big, they have custom hoods, cabinets to the ceiling, glass in cabinets, pendants over the islands..they get tons of light by itself-or the light was added by a photographer when those pictures were taken..and then maybe added some more:) They have almost empty, or otherwise carefully styled countertops. mixed metals, warmth of wood right next to paint..it's not only them being white, or partially white, that makes you like them and think they're lighter. That white is but a piece of a puzzle. Of course you can paint if you want! Please show us counters and backlsplash up close for better color suggestion. How hard is it to paint? Depends whom you ask. I slaved hours over simple gel stain-and still couldn't get it done in some great way. Was acceptable.. So I personally wouldn't do it myself-but I'm VERY not handy. Most people on this planet are handier than me..or at least so I like to think:) Gives hope for the planet:) But. If you embark on the painting journey as they say-make sure to devote time to it. And paint will need to be babied more. Just to add. I like your current stain just fine. Maybe you'd love changing backsplash more-again, can't see it. Can't see how reflective it is, for example. That might make a difference. Maybe different hardware will be something that you'll like more Maybe more light should be installed, hard to say because again, we see just a bit of the kitchen. Do you have enough storage solutions? Do you find the layout easy to work with? Your floors in the kitchen are very nice, and have more staying power than most gray wood floors. Currently people tend to overuse grayish wood that really belongs in few houses only. I can also see you have two types of hardwood..correct me if I'm wrong. I don't want to discourage you-the opposite is true. I want to emphasize that there are many things here you can slowly change that might make much more difference than painting cabinets. And if you still decide to paint-maybe what will fit the kitchen and will make you happier is not white or gray or both- but a different color/combination of colors. Again, really need to see more pics for better advice....See MoreRelated Professionals
