Well, I was hoping someone with more experience would chime in, but since they haven't, I will. I am in zone 5 and my sweet autumn is just now blooming. I'll have to look at the blooms as they die to see if they look like yours, but I don't think it's a problem with the plant itself, which does look nice and healthy as you said. The flowers probably just died off after blooming, which is perfectly normal and you can cut them off if you don't like the look. You certainly can train it to grow sideways. Mine grows straight up until it reaches the floor of my deck, some 10' up and then I train it to run along the railings. In the spring, you can cut yours back to about 6", as I do with mine every year.

Zebrina Hollyhock! It *was* fun, wasn't it? Even though it was just the second Waxahachie swap, we had some old friends returning, & we also met a lot of new friends! A couple of great ideas for future swaps: One person brought bananas & individually-wrapped cheese sticks-what a great "swap" for someone who has too many plants already! & another couple brought decorative rocks, herb products (ie, dried sage, rosemary, & stevia for your pantry, rather than the plants), & crafts like Christmas stockings. Several people were interested in edible plants, & although we did have a few herbs & at least one small fig plant, spring is the very best, most excellent time to plant a vegetable garden, so we might all be thinking about the seeds we can start for the next swap in April. Thanks to all who came & made this swap a success & a wheelbarrow load of fun!
