Is now a good time to trim a Poinsettia?

I have a Poinsettia from last Christmas that has been growing outside the whole summer. It has grown so tall that I want to cut it back before starting it on the daily dark cycle. My question is: is it a good idea to trim the plant right before it goes on the dark cycle regime? Also, I want to grow the cuttings into new plants. Should I leave the cuttings in the light the whole day or should I put them thorough the the dark cycle as well? Thanks!
