do dark colors "soak" up the sun and make a room 'feel' dark?

will dark floors close make house feel smaller?
Comments (12)There's dark flooring and then there is really dark flooring - know what I mean? I have original oak floors in my 1910 brick bungalow. They are dark, maybe an oak stain, but not dark as in walnut stain or black. They are also not golden oak nor does the finish have any red in it. I have these floors in all the rooms except for the kitchen, bath, and laundry room. I do not think they show dust much at all (and I am not a cleaning freak). Dust will show on really dark floors, also pet hair. I do have 9 ft. ceilings and lots of windows in the house. The only area that is dark IMO is the long hallway, which was recently painted white and is now somewhat lighter. Teresa...See MoreISO: paint suggestions to lighten up a room with dark wood paneling
Comments (25)Thank you Betsy! I really do love the aesthetic of Studio McGee. I've been using their work as inspirational images. I also appreciate your suggestions for the stairs and the beams. Now my question is what should we do about the color in the rest of our house? Can we keep it the same and fine a white that will go with it or do we have to paint everything else as well?...See MoreHow do you feel about cream upper cabinets and dark wood lower cabinet
Comments (25)We have a small galley kitchen. Eleven years ago we installed quartersawn oak cabinets, the lowers stained chestnut and the uppers stained sand - an off white. I still love it and left the cabinet scheme when we had to refresh some elements about four years ago. I agree that you should use ubatuba on both perimeter and island. At first I wondered if your backsplash tile was too muddy and 'fancy' for lack of a better word but with your ubatuba, I liked it better the longer I looked at the combination. You get so many opinions - including mine! Have you talked to a tiler about the backsplash installation - they'll require a skilled installer I would think....See MorePlease help, room feels dark and unfinished.
Comments (5)My recommendations would be to look for lighter color counter stools without the back, so the space feels more open. Also, I would recommend adding a mirror to the wall behind the counter chairs. The mirror will bring more light into the kitchen and you can really play with it here, think one fun round mirror on medium to large scale. And you can balance the wall out with stylish wall sconces on each side of the mirror as well. Also, you can add a large art above the fireplace that will set the mood in the area. As far as a rug/ runner goes, if you do have kids and you cook a lot, I would not recommend adding a runner. If you don't, then try to experiment with your style/colors, and see what you like. The runner will add some interest to your kitchen, just chose an easy care rug that can be cleaned and use a non slip pad under it. Hope this helps, good luck!...See Moreapple_pie_order
