Prep sink location decision #1 or #2 ..finalizing plans
Comments (15)Ravmd, your layout is very similar to mine (love my kitchen!), including windows wrapping around the corner. I plumbed my island for a sink, but in order to beat deadlines in getting our certificate of occupancy, I told the guys we'd put the sink in later. We never have. It's sitting on a shelf in the basement waiting for me to feel a need for it. My lovely deep 30" wide sink right where yours is serves well. In your position, I'd probably do just what I accidentally did here--keep my options open by plumbing for a prep sink toward one end or another (cheap and easy), but wait to see if I actually wanted a sink there at this time. My island's hard working, I don't maintain it for looks, but I do love the elegantly uncluttered expanse it presents when not covered with a a meal in progress. Also, my one kitchen splurge, aside from all the windows, was to have our carpenter build a custom hood over the stove. It is the focal view on looking into the kitchen (even before eyes move on to check out the view outside). All a way of saying that for me that key position was far too important for a microwave, which is not the most handsome item in any kitchen and we just use for heating and defrosting anyway. My hood insert, a bottom-market special order from Lowe's for...See MoreLocation of Tapmaster / Trash Foot Pedal / Prep Sink
Comments (4)oldbat2be, we put our tapmaster only on our bigger island sink, not the "cleanup" sink. I guess it might be our "prep" sink even though it's bigger than the other sink. I don't know if we'll miss it on the other sink since our kitchen isn't done yet, but you could always add it later as I don't think it's too hard to retrofit. Fitting all that stuff I would think might be a challenge. We have a farmhouse sink and our plumber was worried about fitting an instant hot, a water chiller, a tapmaster and a garbage disposal under there in a 36" wide cabinet. We gained a few inches b/c we made our island taller (unrelated reasons) but they still said it was a lot to cram under there. Are you using the Hafele foot pedal for your trash? You know it's only for frameless cabinets right? My cabinet maker had to modify it to work w/ our non-frameless ones. Not sure how he is doing it, but it is costing us more than 1 hr. of his time in the quote. I believe (but am not certain) that there was also a comment that the instructions came only in German! ICFgreen, Brizio (I believe) also makes a faucet like the Touch. We originally thought of using the touch but it does not go w/ our kitchen at all. The good thing about the tapmaster is you can use any faucet you want....See MoreWhich prep sink with main silgranite sink?
Comments (4)Like Vic, I'm using the blancorondo, but it might not be as big as you want. Have you looked at the Diamond single bowl (24" wide) or the Precis medium bowl? It's about 13" wide but almost 16" front to back, which I think would be a very generous prep sink, and the drain is far in the back. Comments (56)What exactly are you going to use the prep sink for? Size really does matter with a prep sink depending on its function, and knowing how you’ll use it will help determine how big it should be. I have a prep sink fairly close to my range (so the range and prep sink are on the same counter run) because that is the way I work in the kitchen. In between the range and the prep sink is my main prep area....that is where all the work happens. I am so happy to have the sink there, but it is way too small. It’s a 16” sink, but those dimensions are NOT interior dimensions. The inside actually measures only 13”....so ridiculously small. So make sure you get a sink with INTERIOR dimensions that make sense for how you will use it. I would much prefer a prep sink with an interior measurement of 21” or so.....would be much more practical and useful. Also, I am always putting goopy utensils and small dirty measuring cups etc. in that sink. I do not want to hand wash those items, so what happens to all the dirty gloppy things in the prep sink that need to be put in the dishwasher? Unfortunately unless you have a dishwater very close to your prep sink, you are carrying those dishes/utensils across your floor and counters (dribbling all along the way) in order to put them into the dishwasher that is way over by your cleanup sink. So, my two VERY big regrets in my kitchen design that I am now living with every day is that my prep sink is WAY too small (wish I had gone bigger) and I truly wish I had put a dishwasher (even just a small 18” one or a single dishwasher drawer) next to my prep sink. This is something that bugs me every single day....See MoreSammie J
