Should I replace new laminate flooring if I don't like the color?

Hi everyone! I am purchasing a new home! Yay! The Previous owner did some upgrades such as brand new laminate flooring, which is great, but I don't like the color they chose. I'm wondering if I should change it while I have the chance to do so easier (before I move in and the house is empty), or leave it be for now. Money is a concern as you all know purchasing a home isn't cheap, but this is a two bedroom ranch. The current flooring is a light color and I am drawn to the more rustic look of dark floors. Also, do you think dark floors will make it feel smaller? This is already a really small house. Photos are the current light flooring and examples of ones I like. I plan on painting kitchen cabinets white so I'm not worried about clashing with the current honey color. Thanks in advance!

Congratulations on your new home! How wonderful! While you might want to jump in and start renovating things....I would wait. At most, I suggest you paint your interior (a relatively inexpensive improvement) before you move in. Then....live with things for a while. I appreciate your desire to want to change the color of your floors. But wait. Look instead at other ways of introducing the look that you like in your new home. Rugs. Furniture. Take your time to establish your priorities. There will be so many things that you MUST do when you purchase a home. And they can eat up your budget FAST! Create an idea book. But also include images of homes with lighter colored floors and see how others have decorated around them. Enjoy your new adventure! And savor the experience!

If you absolute,y can’t live with the current t floors and you have the $$$ to spare, go for it. Dark floors, show every bit of prints, dirt and dust, ask me how I know. Never again!

He SHOULD be able to do it so it looks like the original installation. As for how happy he'll be about it (read that to say how much he'll charge you for it), I couldn't tell you, and of course, you'd have to know that before you can tell whether or not it's worth it. Wouldn't hurt to ask.

It doesn't look that bad to me. The pattern would practically disappear with a like-colored grout and would just be a subtle texture. If the color is off (which is best determined in person and in different lighting) it might always annoy you which is a good reason to send it back. But the photos don't look any worse than some others I've seen posted that have been "oooh"ed and "ahhh"ed. I think if you had posted how much you loved it, you'd have had just as many agree. To me, the black hardware and wood valance "speaks" of a more country (vs urban) look. But I don't know the overall effect you're hoping to achieve.

I'm glad to hear that the LED lights are working for you. It sounds like you have a much bigger space than we do, with only 2 more lights. I think this was perhaps our biggest mistake -- just too many of these lights. (As I mentioned, I was worried that LEDs wouldn't put out enough light). Maybe if we had only installed 4 of them, the amount of light would be ok. To reduce the number to 4 at this point would require completely re-placing the lights and rewiring. I wonder also if the increased number of lights in our smaller space is amplifying the effect of the flickering? i.e. maybe it wouldn't be noticeable if the lights were further apart? The housing and dimmer switch we have are both on the compatible list on the Cree website. All 7 of the lights are connected to the same dimmer switch. So I'm not sure what the problem is. When they are on at full power, they don't buzz or flicker. We had friends over yesterday and at full power they thought the lights looked great. (It wasn't too bright for them). Then I dimmed them and they didn't think the buzzing was too bad. They also didn't really notice much flickering. But then I started waving my arms around and they were shocked. The strobe effect when the lights were dimmed made my kitchen seem like a disco! Cbjmidwood, when you dim your lights and wave your arms around, is there any strobing?

I totally feel your pain! Remodels aren't cheap and it's not easy for everyone to picture what something will look like before its done. I had a similar situation - I just didn't feel that I could afford to redo the tile in the entire house - so I only did part of it. Huge mistake. I "solved" the problem with carpet squares. You can buy just what you need, get pretty creative and install them yourself. I'm sure there are many companies, I used Flor. I recommend getting samples - as it's impossible to accurately assess color from the computer monitor. (Samples are free during promotions and sales are frequent.) I would also suggest that moving the sofa to face away from the kitchen will not only cover up some of the transition, but also define the space in a way to enhance the separation of the rooms.

Personally I would wait and live with it a while. My floors are fairly dark and next time I’m definitely doing natural! Too much dust and I think the natural look is very on-trend now. (Also a rug under that living furniture would look much better than the floating rug in the listing photo!)

We lived through laminate installation and it wasn't too bad/messy etc. Unless you have the budget and are 100% sure you can't stand the new floors, or there's a major installation problem, I recommend living with them since they are new.

Edit: I don't think dark flooring will really make it look much smaller. Our previous house (where we installed the laminate) was 3/2 1200sf; the laminate was medium-dark with the wider planks and it added a richness to the space that had always been lacking. The home itself wasn't flooded with natural light so the flooring embraced the cozy feel, to me, overall felt better.

We are re-doing floors right now. Removing old tile and replacing with wood look tile and it is so hard when you live there. I have to move everything.

Are your floors level?

If I were removing laminate I'd personally replace it with an upgrade such as hardwood or tile. They are both natural materials and don't have all the toxins laminate or vinyl has. More money but won't fade, off-gas, and will last forever.
