New Asphalt Driveway Doesn't Look Right

The smaller part of driveway that was done first and in the downpouring rain doesn't look right. They stopped and came back a week later to finish the larger part. Even after numerous other storms, it is a different color and shows lots of roller marks. Where the two parts of the driveway meet, there is an obvious seam and it isn't smooth. The main driveway has areas where water sits because of low spots, is this normal?

The different color side it looks the roller had some dirt on it or it was dirty water that got mixed in with material.

As the puddles go, it looks like the driveway has a nice pitch so there must be depression, they usually caused by poor sub-base compaction, poor material leveling, or a roller was making shortstops.

GN Builders, will that be a problem down the road? This was over $9,000.

This is a difficult question to answer, Think jigsaw puzzle, when we did our rockwork, we laid the largest flat pieces on the bottom, then as we built up we kept trying pieces one at a time until they fit and looked right to us. Sometimes we had to add some dirt to make the rocks fit to our liking. Each row we did was slightly back from the one below and they were all staggered so the gaps didn't line up and no real jutty pieces were sticking out over the row below. It was slow work for us as we had never done this before. The same thing when we built our little waterfall for the Koi pool, I mean puddle, it was a struggle, I kept saying it doesn't look right, DH got annoyed and left in a huff, I kept at it until I was happy with it. All this is probably as clear as mud. LOL Back to what I first said think jigsaw puzzle. Take your time, you will get it just the way you want it. I know you can do it. Dark corner... You have a huge window there. (I can't tell if that's an archway or a window the pic isn't great). But a fixture over the table is plenty. We have a 5-bulb fixture over ours - you can get as much light out of a hanging fixture as you need. I agree on no cans right there. Good point about over by the fridge. What is the little 13" counter for to the right of the fridge? That seems like it'll be wasted space and dark. The 4" Cree are what - 575 lumens? 7 of those plus say 4 more bulbs over the table is 11x575 or approx 6325 lumens. Your kitchen is about 18x12-6x6, 180 sf. That's 35 lumens / sf, which is over the rule of thumb (30). Looks like your housings are about 3' apart. Hopefully someone who's used them can comment on if that is a good spacing for those... my instinct is two cans over each counter section like you have is good -- but I would do slightly larger cans, giving the option to bump up to higher output lights if needed. (a 5" can instead can take up to an 840-lumen LED light, which is a striking 46% more light)

Needing to get the room "done", we used the boxes we had. Maybe will change out to something "lighter" like Jodie White Designs posted. I like that. I wanted to share the temporary "finished" product and say thanks for all the comments. We tried 10 different mirrors, but nothing seemed better than what we had. Still looking for something with a narrower frame but the one we have now is growing on me. Tundra on the walls and Deep Space on the ceiling. New light fixture. I feel like we need something on the wall (left side if you're facing the sink) - maybe a larger art work or a black and white framed print. I love the suggestion of the orchid on the counter to fill the space / extra height. Thank you!

After a good rain, how long does the water sits there?

In any case, at the beginning, not a big deal but it could get worst over time, and if the cause for driveway depressions was poorly compacted subbase it could settle more over time and become a bigger issue.

Usualy you will see minor pudding occur on "a more or less flat surface" and the water usualy will dry-out fairly quickly. In your case, it looks like the standing water is in a well-pitched area which is very uncommon, so the depression there could be a bit excessive.

Also if you in a 4 season region, during the winter season if there is standing water it will turn to ice.

I would get the owner back there and see what they can do to solve this issue.

Only 9K for a complete redo, with new base? Or 9K for a new coat and nothing done to the underneath where it matters?

GN Builders, it last most of the day or loner depending on weather. It will definitely be an ice problem in MN. The owner said he would fill those areas in. I just want a nice driveway that looks good and lasts a long time. JuneKnow it was remove old asphalt and add some new base to old and then put in the new asphalt.
