High ledge in 2-story great room
Comments (34)your house is totally beautiful. Myself if it was my house i would do a few things. First I would paint some color on the walls, a bit darker maybe in browns, or a sage green, or a soft gold..and then I would find some type of art that I love, or large plates or something..and I would put a colleciton of those items on the wall across the entire space at the same level, above the wall and entertainment center..remember you'll have to clean whatever you put up there so try to make the items things that won't gather a lot of dust..also that other large wall area on the other side calls for something large..maybe you could put something in the same venue on that wall.. some ideas might be, say a collection of clocks, a colleciton of pictures, a colleciton of large platters or tin trays, metal grilles..etc. and then if you want to set things on the ledge, try to tie the items into the art on the wall..and keep it simple. say if you were in the desert or mexican region, you could put up there some large mexican type plates or flat wicker type bowls, with some other large urns in a similar style on the ledge.. Say if you are into antiques..you could put a colleciton of antiques across the wall of similar size and shapes and then put a few coordinating antiques on the ledge.. i do see that you enjoy the wicker look, i think i would go with that look by adding a warm brown to the walls or a sage green, and then I would hang the larges wicker trays you can find in a row across the wall, put the large wicker baskets in the far right hand corner, and add a few more around the room..maybe with magazines in them, make sure the scale of the items you use in the room are very very large..you might check out some import stores like Pier one for large items..they have beautiful large painted wooden items that are dark and would go with your wood..some are the size of doors ..they can be quite expensive though so watch for sales..they would be beautiful up there, with maybe some import items on the shelf that would coordinate??...See MoreHelp with 2 story living room
Comments (17)it's hard for me to estimate the size from the pics..think of furniture placement first. you want it to be a welcoming area-meaning some seating, a light or two, a side/coffee table with maybe books to look at, art or mirror or both..I'd take the etagere to other area where the books for sure will be taken out unless that's the only spot it will fit...then I'd think how to place it in a way that it blends into the sitting arrangement I'd definitely do curtains as they'll help to ground high space..no, they won't take off height but will make the living more cozy and down to earth so to say. I'd go with furniture that's also not too light and ethereal, if you want to ground it..meaning: I wouldn't shy away from colors, prints, etc..same goes for curtains. future curtains in your dining don't have to match but do have to play well with the rest of window trreatments, and other fabrics. No, it's not a priority of course, I myself wait for months and years when needed to find right curtains; but do keep it in mind as a part of your general plan. You didn't ask advice about your entry fixture but I'll dare to say in case it's fine with you, that it can be bigger/or maybe just a different shape/or a color-will help with more human scale feeling or so I think..I know, it's not easy because of the height. Don't worry about embellishing and decorating upper parts of walls, decorate as usual, eye level or so..the feeling of height will stay there, the feeling of intimacy will come along it. I speak from my own albeit limited experience of handling entry, living, and dining with very high ceiling. I love cozy-I went with darker flooring, colorful furnishings, patterned curtains, plants..we did inherit huge, extremely nice mirror from previous owners which helped my direction. You can also pick an object or art you love whether you own it already or not. that will help your general vision. It can be painting, rug, fabric, light, chair...you name it. If you prefer less bold pallette, simple patterns-you can still reach that very cozy feel. You need to be comfortable in your room, then others will pick this feeling from you. I'd look at a lot of inspiration pics-they don't have to be of rooms per se btw. Very different things like nature, art, movies can inspire us about the general vibe, the colors, etc. Of course I'd look at rooms as well. On a very practical note, first thing first-Take dimensions, put together a simple plan-room, where the openings are..figure out the things that are most important to fit there and sizes they can be. Post it here if possible-I guess will be easier to give suggestions for furniture placement. If you don't post it put it in your bag anyway, take measuring tape too. That's how you'll always be prepared in case you see something Good luck..it's overwhelming at first but then at some point it's fun:) PS I see you've got some great suggestions above while I was writing, and some visuals as well. Take your time..and again, it'll be fun!...See MoreNeed help with 2 story great room wall that is common with loft wall.
Comments (20)I have a feeling that the shelves with pictures and objects on them may be a passing trend, one that I personally have never found terribly attractive. I do think that more could be done to make the living area more attractive. I'm afraid the rug in the dining area is too small, and the little round rug in front of the couch looks not quite right. I would get a large rectangular rug that covers the whole of the furniture area and find a warmer color that harmonizes with the furniture rather than picking up the cold gray color of the fireplace which doesn't really harmonize with the color of the adjoining cabinets. I would choose different rugs for the living and dining areas. With larger rug areas the sound level in this huge area would probably also be dampened. The picture with the yellow sofa has a much more modern vibe which makes more sense with the shelf arrangements, and probably would look blah without the yellow couch as an interesting focal point. Your colors are all very safe and neutral if you will compare them to the photos of high spaces posted above. I think more lively colors, beginning with some bolder choices of rugs, pillows, etc. would keep the focus on where people are living rather than the high walls. You have a beautiful space (love the windows and views), and to have the furniture turn its back on the view seems a pity. A lot can be done to resolve some of these issues, and perhaps seeking some professional help would be a good direction to take....See MoreLiving room window selection help
Comments (7)@User The windows in the bedrooms are single hing. The rest are fixed. The exterior walls are 2x6 framing and no we're not limiting the header span. We're not limited to the 6 ft slider. We wanted lots of natural light coming in. That side faces east. Right now it just seems not balanced....See MoreManikanta Swamy
