Which is the new and which is the old? Refinishing only part will probably end up the same way, half a** match unfortunately.

The new one is the floor by the fireplace. Yeah that was what I was afraid of. Spending money on same results still.

Minimally I would use the same quarter round everywhere for consistency.

Is a Schluter edge available for wood to wood floor transitions? I really don't like what's there, it seems to be a trip hazard.

Would painting the molding white at least make it a little more seamless? I didnt even notice that until Hallet & Co pointed out the quarter round is not the same

Painting the quarterround in the family room will help a little.

Next time, you should get unfinished wood and have it finished to match the existing. Or have it all refinished at the same time. (I also say that for future readers of this post).

Your flooring "guy" should have known this. Even your flooring salesman should have known.

I'm sorry but the only option (to get what you want) is to sand and refinish ALL of it at once.

If you had planned on that in the first place, your flooring professionals would have matched the species and the cut and the grade of floor. They also would have matched the THICKNESS of the planks.

Or ideally they would have told you how it was going to turn out...and that the best option = remove the old and lay all the same floor. It is CHEAPER than doing a sand/refinish on Aluminium Oxide floors for the TOTAL square footage.

Sigh. I think you have TWO different species of wood. You certainly have two different GRADES of wood (the new one has ++++ plank variation and HEAVY grain presentation. This tells me that if you sand all of this down you will STILL have two floors that look VERY different...even with the same stain.

Right now my 'fix' = remove the old wood in the entrance/foyer. Use the entrances to the other rooms as the 'break'. Use the edge of the new wood as the break.

Now you drop in stone or porcelain or vinyl that LOOKS like vinyl or porcelain. By removing the SMALL amount of old wood in the entrance you will REMOVE the eye sore that is 'mismatched' wood floors touching one another.

It will do the 'most for the least'. Removing the old wood and prepping the subfloor = $2/sf. New stone-look vinyl tiles = $4/sf. Cost of install = $3/sf. Total cost of job = $9/sf.

Size of the job? Looks to be about 100sf = $900 and you have a BEAUTIFUL foyer without ANYONE noticing the two woods are not the 'same'.

It is the simplest, easiest way to fix this without messing around with sand/refinishing wood that shouldn't be touching one another anyways.

I agree the the molding should be painted white. How about a transition area in the same tiles as your fireplace?

Installing the same type of wood as the old and then stripping the old, sanding and finishing all of the floors at once is the best solution.

So we actually went and had the molding paint white thanks to the suggestions here (which I would never have thought of) and it made a whole of difference in my eyes. It’s not ideal yet but it’s something I can live with for now.

Remove the flooring from the entry foyer. Extend the new flooring to the entry door. Transitions should be at passageways to other rooms. not in the middle of a floor. The mismatch will be less visible.

Paint the quarter round white and put your rugs back down. When the rooms are bare except for the floors, it all jumps out at you. Part of the charm of older houses is that that have a bit of quirk and character. I don’t like the transition strip - it looks like a tiny ledge. Not sure if you can do anything about it, but a wider one may help. Do not put tile there! Once your rugs, furniture and decor are back in, you may think a bit different.
