Anybody use Ball's new pectin in a canister?
Comments (11)Like Dave says, the no sugar pectin gives the maker all the control over the sweetness. I helped my neighbors make grape jam the other day. Their recipe called for 5 cups of grape juice and 7 cups of sugar. The grapes were sweet and I told them that was stupid and that I'd run home and get my own pectin and use it in their jam. We ended up still using 7 cups of sugar but used between 16 on 17 cups of juice and pulp for a batch (that is an extra 11 or 12 cups of fruit). They could not believe how over sweetened it would have been if they had used the approximate 22 cups of sugar their recipe called for. It would have been way too sweet (not very healthy either) for me to eat with that much sugar unless you are on the please give me Type 2 Diabetes Diet. Comments (5)When my Hoover upright died I bought a Kenmore Progressive canister. I really like this vacuum and bought another one for my vacation home. It was the top rated canister when I bought it and has consistently been in the top for years. It easily goes under furniture. I buy the bags at Sears but Kmart might have them or or you can order online. I have hardwood, porcelain tile, wall to wall carpet, area rugs and some very expensive Persian rugs with fringe. One feature to look for in any vacuum you buy is the ability to control the suction - in addition to adjusting the height. I can quickly turn a small ring on the handle and reduce suction and then vacuum my small area rugs and Orientals without fear of sucking them off the floor or pulling out threads. Over the years we've had many dogs- German Shepherds from Germany who have a double coat, Laboradors and finally Rottweilers. It vacuum the dog hair better than the Hoover it replaced. Another advantage of a canister is the ability to remove the power head and vacuum drapes and cobwebs on the ceiling. My Kenmore has 2 lights - one on the power head and a second light on the end of the wand which illuminates what you're vacuuming even when the power head is removed. I love that feature. I can remove the power head by just pressing on small pedal on the head with my foot. It's very quick and I can reattach the wand without bending. I often removed the power head to vacuum along the baseboards. There are also the usual tools stored on the back of the canister - crevice tool, brush, HW floor attachment and also a handy, small motorized brush head (a Power Mate JR.). The cord is long. The vacuum is not lightweight - but I'm not sure what you consider heavy or light. I don't find it particularly noisy but again that's a individual preference. I have tried Miele's. Even though there's a big difference in price I would buy one if it had everything I wanted. I'd suggest you actually try your vacuum before purchasing it. I even took one of my small Persian rugs to the store and tried a couple of vacuums on it to make sure I could safely vacuum. The biggest issue I had with the Miele was that it was difficult to maneuver and I could feel pressure in my wrist and hand when I turned it. I even tried another one just to make sure. I don't remember the model name but it was their most expensive. It also didn't have two lights or the suction control on the handle. This was 5 years ago so that may have changed. But the best advice is to try several out before buying to see what works for you. Try maneuvering one, see if it lays flat enough and then try carrying it around to check the weight....See MoreVacuum- Upright vs Canister
Comments (13)This issue is clouded by the fact that all vacuums tend to now be throw-aways that compete on price. Once it was clear who was the winner in each category. If you can get a good upright it will have a powerful brush rubbing and vibrating the fibers of a carpet while a good (not great) vacuum sucks up the dirt that is loosened. Canisters had very powerful vacuum power to collect as much dust as ome could loosen with the equipped attachments. Simple as that. Now Consumer Reports is contending with both the inherent properties of various models and the junk that is out there. Wwe have a whole house of carpets to contend with. So my wife has a Kirby that does the job. Not junk and very expensibe. It will never make a Consumer Reports best buy category, but it works like all good vacuums did in the old days. I have a small plug in hand held vac. that Consumer Reports said was very good and I use it for all small jubs around the house and cars. Comments (6)Yes, you sure can run a stove off of a 5 gallon tank of propane. Many natural gas stoves can be converted to propane gas simply by changing (sometimes adjusting) the individual burner jets. Keep in mind that in some situations you must use a "LOW pressure" pressure regulator for use on the LPG bottle. The outlet pressure from the 5 gallon bottle to the stove burner is important to obtain the correct operation of the stove. However, I would suggest you consider using a "HIGH pressure" burner like the ones in the link below. There are several models that work well for cooking steaks. The Cadillac burner pictured below is one type of burner that I have and often use. It has lots of BTUs which I use for stir fry and cooking in large dutch ovens or stock pots. A Wok will fit too into that burner. You will get close to professional tasting stir fry foods because of the high heat capabilities. Suggest you get the stand too to put this stove at about knee height. I also have the Super Cooker Propane stove. This portable stove is real good for blackening steaks, deep frying, and boiling seafood in large stock pots. Notice the large size of this burner......great for heating large skillets evenly. The pressure regulator that comes with this stove works well. However, I use a better (IMO) adjustable High pressure regulator with my stove to get an even higher BTU output when I need it yet still maintain a barely simmer flame when I need that too. This stove works great and one that I highly recommend. This is coming from a guy who does a lot of cooking outdoors often in huge batches.......
