Lighting Design Dilemma Bathrooms

Bathroom vanity--mirror help

We have a double vanity with two lights over it. To the left of the vanity we have a makeup station with no lights. The vanity is about 70 inches long. From the top of the outlet to the bottom of the plate on the light is about 37 inches.

I am planning on putting a black framed decorative mirror over the makeup area that measures about 36 x 24. It's oval and has sort of curved "fancy" design. I’ve attached a pic of a similar mirror.

I think the mirror over the vanity should be simple, like a beveled glass mirror or just a simple rectangle, as to not be mixing different designs. I don't want to put two mirrors over the vanity because then it just seems like lots of mirrors.

What would you suggest for the vanity mirror? I want it to start above the outlet, but where should it go to under the lights? I read mixed info about whether or not the lights should hang over the mirror.

Since there’s no lighting over the makeup area, a wall mirror won’t be very helpful. Besides, you’ll be using the lighted makeup mirror. Sooo, I think I’d put a piece of art there instead of a mirror. Or maybe some shelving:

Hi Sammy, thank you! I love what you posted above. The only thing is that I think I will use that makeup area to dry my hair, rather than where it's wet by the sink. And to put my heated irons, curlers, etc. So I think--despite the lack of light--that I will use the mirror over there to do my hair. So that's why I picked a mirror that is also sort of pretty for that area.

So...if I'm sort of stuck on the idea of putting a mirror there...what would you do over the vanity?

Framed or beveled frameless, either will look fine. Actually since you don't have a light fixture, framed might be better. That was my first inclination but I thought it might be too much dark wood because of the medicine cabinet. I'd use a plain frame about 2 1/2" wide. I would still raise it above the back splash to let several inches of paint show.

If you do 4 sconces, 2 for each mirror, it will make each mirror seem its own entity, IMHO. If you do a double sconce in the middle, it seems like.....an after thought? And the sconces will not be equidistant from each other and the mirror. My OCD kicking in, I suppose. If the space between is larger than the mirrors, I think you should go with 2 separate sconces. If the space is smaller than the mirrors, I think you could go with a double light. Just make sure the spaces are fairly equidistant.

HI everyone!! Sorry I haven't responded. I don't get Houzz alerts on my phone and didn't see all of these messages. First of all, thank you all so much for taking your time to respond. Can I just say how amazing the Houzz community is?? In response to some of the questions: My father is 70. He very recently had a major brain surgery so my mother wants to update the bathroom to just make it a little nicer for him. Unfortunately, our budget only allows for a new vanity, mirror, and lights. So far he hasn't said anything about the toilet being too low. I think that's ok to stay for now. He likes lots of drawers so I like the idea of putting more shelving above the sink! We just can't figure out the "style" of the bathroom is so that we could get a matching sink. We just don't know what to google. Love the vanity pictures you guys have sent - I'm forwarding them to my mother right now

Agree with Design Girl. Seems like a waste to cover up your wall tile with a "slab" of mirror. Arteriors has some more interesting mirrors. Because your make-up mirror is already decorative, I would keep the vanity mirror pretty simple. I would recommend getting a rectangular, standard framed mirror. As it may be difficult to find the same frame, I suggest going with a thin, black frame for the vanity mirror.

Regarding the height, IMO I think it would look best to have some space between the lights and the mirror.
