Curb appeal help, please
Comments (26)Just because you haven't jumped on suggestions made so far, I don't think that makes you resistant to changes. Sometimes it takes lots of different eyes and ideas being thrown out for something to appeal to you. Hopefully, more people will have other ideas that would catch your attention and some good ideas have been made so far (Grapefruit's screen door, steps and railing suggestions, Annie's ideas about the window trim and missing screen, etc., removing the TV antennae if possible, and lpm's landscape ideas). I personally would explore the possibilities of a new color; from what I see about it online, it seems like if it's prepared properly, changing the color shouldn't be a worry. For me, it would be worth a try. I think it could make the world of difference in the curb appeal to have a new roof and siding color combo. Painting aluminum siding. eta: I don't know about adding another roofline....my suggestions were just to get you thinking about doing something horizontal across the front of the house, like a trellis/pergola, to shelter the door a bit and hide the gutter. If you add a new roof, it may be possible to extend it a bit to accomplish those things, but you probably need to see an architect or designer or rely on a talented contractor to help you with that....See MoreCurb appeal help. Comments (29)I wonder how many won't enter because of the US flag. People are nuts over such things today, and they would probably never say that it was an issue for them, but it might be. Work with the color of the drive and the cobblestones out front. Stain the brick charcoal, paint the shingles lighter gray and then pick up white for the trim and windows. Landscaping is a big issue for me, especially around the pool. Remove the tired pool furniture, umbrella and awnings. Buy some replacements now while the end of season sales are on. Hydrangeas are a typical Nantucket bloom but it is too late for them this year. You can put some out for spring though. Hopefully, you won't be there to see them bloom....See MoreCurb appeal help please
Comments (6)I agree with the others. Teeny-tiny trim painted a contrasting color is not appealing. It just looks patchy. Paint all trim the same color as the house. If you want contrast, paint the door itself a contrasting color. And/or install nice wide shutters (same color as the door) on the upper two windows....See MoreCurb appeal help please
Comments (15)Hi Melissa c- I like your shutters. If they don't need painting, I would leave them alone and save the money to use on something else. I think the front of the house could be improved by putting something over the front door. I am not sure what, maybe a portico. If it could be something that sticks out a bit to protect from the rain, that would be great. if not, then just something for looks. What color is your front door? If it is wood, then leave it that way. If it is painted red, I might change it. Larger light fixtures might be nice. And big brass house numbers to the left of the front door. I love, love window boxes. Some people hate them. I don't know your climate and the exposure of the front of your house. Before you decide, think about whether you are willing to water the boxes upstairs. With the blue shutters, depending on your tastes, you can choose foliage that is variegated like coleus, tradescantia, plectranthrus and intersperse flowering plants. Or go for something like ornamental cabbage. If window boxes are not you thing, I would really buff up the area in front of your house with some great bushes. I am crazy for things in colors of purple, blue, pink and white, and that attract butterflies and hummingbirds like lilac, buddleia, hydrangea, salvia, passiflora, ipomoea, morning glory, jasmine, nicotiana, foxglove. I would get some solid perennials and supplement with annuals for color and things you can cut and bring in for your vases. Maybe some things you can sow by seed easily like cosmos. Drape a string netting against the bush and sow sweet pea, they grow so easily and smell lovely, and not too strong. If you have lots of money, maybe you can build a little sitting area, maybe even a pergola. Then perfect your sweet tea and muffins because the neighbors will come running....See Morecherie3151
