Remodeling/custom cabinets/refrigerator

We are in the process of a large remodeling project. Our cabinet maker had all our appliance measurements. The refrigerator just was delivered and we are unable to open the doors as they bump into the cabinet doors. If we pull the refrigerator out several inches then the doors will clear but that defeats the purpose of having a cabinet depth refrigerator. Is there a solution?

The doors must sit forward of the side panels or adjacent cabinet doors in order to open. They cannot sit behind the side panels. Pull it forward until the doors are outside the enclosure. Or buy a built in fridge. Cabinet depth is not a built in. You really want a built in.

A cabinet maker is not a kitchen designer and this is what happens but FYI even with a counter depth fridge the doors sit outside the frame work of the cabinets so not a true builtin fridge just a counter depth one.

I have a new twist. I did a kitchen once where the fridge was inset into a wall of cabinets. We made the hole big enough but the fridge still wouldn't fit. What was the problem? The side walls of the fridge were built with too much foam insulation and they bowed out almost a half-inch on both sides, so the fridge was almost 1 inch wider than spec. We managed to fix it by cutting holes in the side panels of the cabinetry to allow for the "fat" fridge. The only time you would see the holes is when you pulled the fridge out for cleaning, etc. It was either that or get a new fridge or redo the cabinets. The owners went with cutting the holes. They were ready for their house back by then and it was essentially a no-cost fix.

I faced the same dilemma about 6 weeks ago. We'd ordered KA's French door fridge and needed THREE door pulls for it! Yikes, I had no idea they were so expensive! Since I already have a bit of arthritis in my fingers, comfort was my Number #1 concern. I found a recommendation for Hardware Hut (www.hardwarehut.com) here on GW and was amazed at the selection. The prices were the best also. When I narrowed my search, I visited several cabinet showrooms to look and feel the pulls they offered. I ended up picking Top Knobs M-848 18" appliance pulls/handles in the pewter. I also have bin pulls on part of my cabs and wanted to stay away from the industrial look. I also steered away from the pulls that were too thin, had ridiculous uncomfortable additions to them or had ends sticking out that might snag on clothes. We've been using our kitchen now for the past two weeks and I am really happy with the appliance pulls we decided on. Regardless of what initially attracts you, my best advice is to try out as many pulls yourself as possible. I was amazed at how uncomfortable many pulls were. The cabinet front fridge doors are a bit heavy anyway . . . go for comfort as well as good looks.

If you live in an area with a decent amount of industry you should be able to have panels made fairly inexpensively. If you want magnets to stick, it has to be steel. You can have it powdercoated wherever they redo lawn furniture, or have it painted by a body shop, or you can buy colored steel sheets through an architectural building supply company. You can use strong thin magnets to adhere the panels to a regular steel front fridge, or you can wrap plywood with it to use in the custom panel fridge. Any time you do custom work, even DIY, it's going to cost money. How much you want to spend is up to you. If your budget extends to the custom panel fridge but not to having panels made, you could also do plywood or fiberboard panels and paint with magnet paint, then your color over it. It would be more like having cabinet panels (i.e., painted wood or woodlike surface), but would still give you magnets and color. It all hinges on what is acceptable expense to you.

You have to pull the refrigerator forward just until you clear the cabinets. The counter depth refrigerator don’t mean the door will be flush with the cabinets but the body will be. Think that without the doors the refrigerator would be flush. My refrigerator I used a deep panel finish to have the same look without reducing refrigerator capacity.

A built in would not have the same issue. Buy a 10K SubZero if you want that built in. Otherwise put a stop behind the current fridge to keep it from rolling in too deep.

I was going to say what JuneKnow said. A “counter-depth“ fridge just indicates its depth—the doors will have to sit proud of the adjoining cabinetry in order to open. If you want the doors of your fridge to be totally flush with your cabinetry, you would have had to buy a “fully-integrated” fridge. It has special door hinges and door construction that enable the doors to be flush and still fully open. Even a “built-in” fridge sits an inch or so proud of the adjoining cabinetry. Only a “fully-integrated” fridge is completely flush. Having said that, either a built-in or a fully-integrated fridge will be 2 to 5 times the cost of your fridge.

^^this one is the Miele 36” built-in. It is $9,300.

Pull it forward the few inches necessary to clear. As was already said, that's how it was designed to be installed. This doesn't defeat the purpose. A standard depth refrigerator would jut out much farther into the aisle.

Just pull the refrigerator forward until the front of the refrigerator's 24"-deep cabinet*, not the doors, is flush with the adjacent cabinets. Remember that you must allow at least 2" at the rear of the refrigerator as specified in the Installation Clearances section of the guide. Then level the refrigerator as described in the User Manual**.
