You have to be careful about starting and stopping before the very last step (actually the hallway floor) depending upon how thick the runner is. Believe it or not, neuromucularly your feet are "programmed" after each has taken one step up or down. You should actually be ok, the more problematic situation is when there is bare stairs and carpeting at the top: since it is a "higher" step, due to the carpet thickness it can trip you up sometimes. What could potentially happen here is that your food expects to meet the step before it actually does since the last step is "lower" due to the absence of carpet. If you notice this you could place an area rug at the top.

Can you show the living area next to the staircase? You have so many color elements going on--golden brown tile, reddish brown steps and banister, a patch of turquoise, what looks like navy and white rug, yellow chair. So lets look at the fixed elements: gold/brown tile and steps and banister. The runner should go with those basics with some possible small areas of color. A golden sisal with reddish brown binding could work. Or a print or tweed in golds, reddish brown, a bit of yellow. This is a jute:

Thanks, Jan! I just snapped a couple additional photos showing the area at the front entry in relation to the front hallway where the runner is + a length shot of the runner. I measured from the door to the wall where the hallway starts and it’s 72 in. The length of the door across (not counting the molding on the sides) is 36 in. exactly. And the widest I could probably go without interfering with the air vent is 48 in. But i’m afraid to get one too big so that its too close to the hallway runner. shouldn’t there be some space? what’s the recommendation there? I also measured the width of the hallway and it’s 43.5 in. Given those measurements, do you have a suggestion on which entry rug and runner sizes would work best? Thank you!

I think if I wanted a runner there and you love what you have, I'd just have it run in the part of the hallway coming up from the stairs. The place where you have the runner in the background in that latest picture, looks like it's part of a room and not part of the hallway? That last runner you posted is very nice and looks like it would coordinate well, too, if you really think you need something longer than your current one.
