I suppose hanging it helps keep more of the handle in sticky. And the flat end and sides let you spread it on your scone easily (if the table is otherwise poorly set with no spreader at your place, heavens).

There are some cut glass ones on eBay. Apparently, the spoon and framework are removable, so that might not be the original dish to which it was attached. I still like the version you found, though.

It does look like the framework is removable, doesn‘t it, Fun? That makes sense, so you can wash the dish properly, and even maybe use the framework on other dishes, and maybe other spoons, too. Seems like they’d be great for a buffet. I don’t know if I’ll be going back to the shop soon, but I’ll be on the lookout for similar.

I was given one that is similar it is used for olives or pickle slices so the juice or brine can drip off before you put the food on your plate. I use it for buffet service

I think they are nut or candy/mint dishes - that looks like a nut scoop to me.

It's really a party dish for mints and nuts, but relish, jelly, olives, as well.

I received several at my bridal shower, many years ago. Quit using the spoon holder, but still have the dish and spoons.

I do not think that was the original spoon for that dish. I was given a glass dish with the thing to hang a spoon as a graduation present from HS and it was labeled for jelly. However the spoon was round with the bowl being a pressed rosette. Which is different than what many call a jelly spoon which can have a slightly pointed area. I have seen that shape called a sugar scoop but some of the more ornate ones about 2/3rds of the front portion is flat with only a small indented area in the back. Since larger ones like I just mentioned were used for serving fish back I suspect when they were popular the smaller ones may have been used at the table to help eat the fish course. During the Victorian and Edwardian time there were lots of purpose use dinner pieces that fell out of favor when there were no longer enough servants.

When I googled, I found a few spoons like that that were called ice cream spoons. Not scoops--spoons.

Maifleur, you're probably right that it isn't the original spoon. But, it does show that you could change spoons for your tabletop theme or for what you are serving.

I hadn't thought of parmesan, Joanne, my parmesan dishes have an attached lid. But it certainly could work for that.

That adorable little dish is certainly versatile!
