Limelight Hydrangea HELP!!

My Limelight hydrangea leaves are getting brown spots, then turning yellow and brown, and falling off. Some are dry, crunchy, and brown, too. We had our hydrangeas (three) planted in February. I love these flowers but am, admittedly, a novice when it comes to plants and flowers. We live in the coastal south, just north of Jacksonville, FL.

HELP! What’s wrong with my hydrangeas?

Are you getting the leaves wet? Overhead watering causes all kinds of fungal diseases so it is best to water the soil and never the leaves. Water using soaker hoses or drip irrigation. If you use a regular sprinkler, set the station that waters the hydrangea to activate around 6-8am so the leaves do not stay wet for long periods of time.

Dispose of the affected leaves when they brown out or when they fall. Do the same with all plant debris (blooms, dead stems, etc.). Throw them in the trash since they will have fungal spores. Replace the old mulch with new mulch too.

Since we are near the end of the growing season, I would not worry too much about the leaves since they will fall shortly. But take steps to minimize conditions that might help fungal spores thrive. You should get new foliage in Spring. Continue taking the steps mentioned every year and the leaves will improve with time.

Is it in sun or shade? Probably wants afternoon shade in your location.

You should provide them with water if a finger inserted into the soil to a depth of 4" feels dry or almost dry. You may also consider putting something to block afternoon sun as now is a bad time to be planting hydrangeas. Eventually they may be ok but on year 1 they tend to pout.

Not a sign of distress......that's just how it grows :-) Hydrangeas are caning shrubs, not trees, and are carefully trained into a tree-like form by removing lower branches. Those are just the starts of new branching and you do want to remove if you wish to maintain the plant as a 'tree'. Don't "chop" off - rub them off with your fingers while still very new and young. This leaves no stubs or scarring and tends to limit any regrowth in that area.

I would likely plant it about 5’-6’ from the edge of the yard about half way back towards the house, preferably in a planting bed with other shrubs, perennials, or ground covers. This is a large, full plant, typically somewhere near 10’ Tall and wide within 10 years, and it isn’t easy to control size with pruning because it regrows quickly every year but often is floppier with more pruning due to large, heavy bloom heads. You don’t want it where it will interfere with sight lines to the road from the driveway, so not near the road or even close to the sidewalk. You also don’t likely want it marooned by itself in the middle of the lawn or blocking sight lines to the front door.

I do not have and have not grown one but am going on general plant and design knowledge. I think one should first accept the general character of the plant and place it accordingly. And according to that maxim, I think at the intersection of drive and public walk plant is the wrong place for this plant. It should be more like in the frontal portion of a backdrop, such as part of the planting around a house foundation, or at the property perimeter ... but not in the foreground. I would relocate it, and I think in that case, it's floppiness would not be an annoyance. Considering that it is a mere few feet tall, I would not think that making a "tree" form out of it (by removing lower limbs) is right or a good idea. That's something one might want to do with PG Hydrangea on account of it being well over someone's head.
