Ceiling trim: Crown moulding in hallway

How to install crown moulding bear staircase and on hallway ceiling that’s under stair 2nd floor.

Take pics from much further back so we can see the whole space you are dealing with . From what I can see there is no way that stirwell can have crown molding

You're getting rid of the popcorn first right? Putting crown molding next to popcorn is like parking a Smart Car next to a Ferrari.

Also with that little 45º ceiling piece under the stairwell, if you have a very experienced crown installer there are some "unique" solutions but they will all look a bit less than ideal.

Hi, I'm not very good at color combos but I can tell you that Recessed lighting can be painted to match something other than a white ceiling. I have several types of DIY recessed lights (canned lights, pot lights, acne ceiling, whatever they call them now. lol) in our home, all of them had to be painted because we couldn't afford anything but the standard, cheapie, white trims. Here's a pic of the latest trim around the shower light. It was originally white, but now is a pretty good facsimile of ORB to match the other accessories in our DIY tiny master bathroom. This is the only pic of light trim I have on this computer but we've painted all the trims to our recessed lights to either match the ceiling color in the room or to match other accessories in the room. Where there's a will....... :) Please excuse the messy paint job... we were still trying out color. :)

acountryfarm, is that glossy paint on your ceilings, or a semigloss? DH is into flat flat flat, yet I think the glossy finish can yield some interesting effects. We used our ceilings to tie the open rooms together. So the wall color in the DR went on the ceiling in the library and the walls in the library went on the ceiling in the foyer. The DR ceiling is in the blue, a project waiting...when I get some scaffolding, my plan is to paint it like a sunset sky. What's really interesting is, because the light is so different, the paint on the wall in the DR looks completely different than it does on the ceiling. Our carpenter refused to believe me, until he took an actual swatch and held it up against each to see that they matched. I also used darker ceiling colors to bring the ceilings down in smaller rooms. So the tray in the study went a dark taupe to offset the high ceiling in a smaller room. I did the same in the master bath as it too is smaller yet tall.

I think it depends on the overall scheme: In the 18th and early 19th century it was often painted the same color as the walls if it was wood millwork and it was often painted the same color as the ceiling if it was ornamental plaster work. Through the middle of the 19th century into the 20th century when stained woodwork was in vogue, it was often stained, which made it different than both the walls and the ceiling. Then when everyone started painting all this stained woodwork white, it got painted white. I think it depends on the room and what you want it to look like. There isn't really any final answer except it usually isn't it's own exclusive color.

We always put some sort of color on the ceilings but it's always light. In 3 rooms we used the same wall shade on the ceiling.. light gray, vanilla latte & a grayish green. I've found the vanilla latte (Glidden) is a good ceiling color and have used it in other rooms. In our dining room we used a Behr color called French Bread on the ceiling, then a custom color on the walls with a green crown molding. Our bedroom is the only room with a lighter color crown & molding but the paint is darker. I think it's a matter of preference. You have to find what works for you.

Well there aren't really defined "solutions." Like I said you need someone who REALLY knows how to cut and cope crown.

So for example, crown most commonly comes in 52º, 45º or 38º varieties. If you get a 38º or 45º crown, it will probably drop faster than that stair incline. Normally you nail crown to the wall not the ceiling(especially if you have a truss roof), but in this case you could nail or glue that piece under the stairs into the ceiling, cope it into the wall on the end, and then fill in from the bottom of the crown to the stair tread with sheet rock either angled or flat. It will look a bit goofy, but if it is clean and professionally done it won't be super noticeable.

Or you could just terminate your crown in the 45º under the stairs.

Or if the stair incline is somehow exactly 45º(I doubt it) you could actually lay the crown's angled back right on that spot.

This looks like no man’s land for crown moulding... you may be able to bring some interest to these odd shape and angled walls by painting them in slightly different shades ...to accentuate them architecturally rather than with a confusing trim configurations...

I would worry about the dark gray making these areas look cave-like...and dark

So IMO you really do not want help I think you should not have done crown anywhere .If cave s what you want you better get much better lighting and all LEDs in 4000K

what do you mean I do not want help? This is why I posted.

There is no crown moulding anywhere. So far first part of project has now LED 4,000. The other half hallway will be completed with LEDs installed.
