Your favorite place to buy new roses?
Comments (7)Holly - I don't have an easy answer for that question. I think there are several really good places. I ordered from several companies for early spring delivery this year, and I ordered some a little later than normal, because there are always roses to be added at the last minute. My first place to reserve roses was Pickering, then they informed me they would not be shipping to the US this year. I had read good things about Palatine, so I gave them a try and have been very pleased, their roses are very vigorous. I also ordered from Edmunds, Witherspoon, Rosemania, Roses Unlimited, Heirloom and Northland. I read the reviews of the different companies on the Garden Watchdog. If they have too many negatives I do not order from them. I think that there are some other really good companies. I tend to prefer grafted roses, but I'm giving own-root a chance and so far I'm pleased. I'll probably be ordering from Pickering again too. I wouldn't say I have a favorite. I think most of the companies we read about on this forum carry a quality product and I don't want to see any more rose nurseries going out of business....See MoreBirthday Roses! Comments (18)Happy Belated Birthday! If you have limited space, I cannot recommend Brother Cadfael. He throws out huge canes. I now have one that is about 6 feet tall. For some reason this year he had just gotten bigger than ever. That is with severe pruning. He mostly stands about 5 feet tall. Good first bloom then sporadic afterwards. He doesn't like the heat and will bloom when it cools down. Scent to die for! Not great as a cut flower. I adore this rose and will never be without it. Here he is as a baby plant. He is very easy to start on his own root. Which is what this picture shows. Here is a more established version that I cut back to about 2 feet in January. This is his picture in May. Those rungs are 4 inches apart and the arbor starts at about 6 inches off the ground. You can barely make out the first rung. Sharifa Asma. Love that rose. Gets to be about 3--4 feet by 3--4 feet. Great first blush. Spotty afterwards. Poor rebloom until it cools down again. Scent to die for. Gorgeous blooms. Love that rose but she got the shovel prune this year. I miss her terribly. If you want a pink with beautiful cupped blooms that stays relatively "small" for an Austin in an area that has warm summers, I would recommend Pretty Jessica. She gets to be about 5 feet tall and is not very wide. Blooms well in the heat. Great rose....See MoreReverence for Roses, Palatine - Hurrah for mail-order rose nurseries!
Comments (42)Perma: Yes, an antique rose is much more than just a rose. It's history, it's romance, it's beauty, it's fragrance, it's science, it's life, it's culture, it's poetry, it's magic. It's a reason to get out of bed in the morning--to look around excitedly to see what bloomed. Like you this is basically my only indulgence. I've been frugal by necessity for decades. This is really the only thing I've done for myself and I don't feel guilty for spending the money. What's stopping me now is I have no sunny space left to put them and I am really pushing it on shade tolerance with many of them already. Ingrid: I agree. I think the future will be worse than those forecasts. Jin: Yes, with money just about anything in the garden is possible. I could spend thousands easily in the garden. Every year! I want to fix my paths and get some flowering plants that are shade tolerant. Maybe a bunch of encore azaleas for starters. I'm eventually going to have to shift my focus to shade gardening because for every square foot of sun I have about 200 square feet in shade. I really wish I could get as worked up over shade plants as I am for antique roses. As an aside, my crape myrtles are all blooming now and they are really beautiful but they do not make my heart go pitter patter like my roses do....See MoreOur wish comes true, more European roses from NIRP through Palatine!
Comments (168)I am speechless… What an amazing thread! Thank you, Helen! and Everyone for your lovely photos & comments on NYRP roses. I tried perusing most of it this evening! I am new to NIRP roses but after seeing a few weeks ago Helen’s roses I choose a few for my spring list from Palatine. Also, I have been eyeing a few of them from your garden photos on other threads. I am so excited to order in Dec.: 1. Rosemantic Pink 2. Rosaraie du Chatelet 3. Maybe Rosemantic Fushia/ or Kordes-Dark Desire Parfuma (Can’t decide.) Rosemantic Cream & Anastasia are gorgeous-love them, too! @Ceres , Love your Forever Rose, do you know if it is BS resistant. @Amanda Dickerson, I see you have BS, too, looking for resistant roses. Me, too. After reading your experoence w/BS on NIRP roses I am concerned, but wish to try a few. However, I have had great success w/Kordes roses & Meilland roses not getting BS-the most resistant in my garden. I have Polar Express, , Earth Angel, Summer Romance, Beverly, Wedding Bells, Madame Anisette, Pomponella , Cinderella, Lions Fairy, & more Kordes doing well-almost no BS. I have Francis Meilland, Princess Charlene de Monaco, Ives Piaget, Cream Ives Piaget (Classic Woman) Meillands-almost no BS. Almost any rose can get BS if sitting in water-with way too much rain this year, but many had zero BS anyway. They are the best BS resistant roses I have out of a hundred roses almost. I have others if you need a longer BS resistant list. Savanna is BS resistant-zero BS! Carol, Thanks for pointing out this thread. I am so busy…I am missing these anazing threads! @kathyc_z10 Kathy, Thank you for your photos of Roseraie Du Chatelet -what a magnificent rose-love its name-it’s color is beautiful & excited about its vigorous growth! NIRP ROSES are so lushious! THANK YOU, everyone! again for your comments & photos on NIRP International roses & website. What a wonderful company of superb roses! Can’t wait to put in my first order for them!...See Moresbrklyn_7bny
