Front door landscaping - what do I do here?
Comments (2)The place to start is with a PLAN. Even though you might decide to act as your own landscape designer after getting some advice from people here, you'll still need to convert whatever ideas you come away with into a plan before doing any work. In order to get good advice, you need to convey good information about the existing conditions of your property, mostly through pictures. Here, however, comes the complaint: your pictures are lacking in the information they provide. They're dark, a bit fuzzy, incomplete, and some not from good viewpoints. I see some big trees ... but I don't really see them, or how they affect the picture of your house. One picture should be distant enough to include them so we know how they fit in. Then, from a distance of about 25' from the house, lined up with the front door, there should be a complete, left-to-right span of the property, from lot line to lot line so we can see more detail of what's planted in front of the house. The pictures should slightly overlap so we can follow one picture to the next, and understand what relates to what. Hopefully, you could take such pictures when there are not strong shadows covering the plantings....See MoreDouble front door color on the inside
Comments (15)I think I would have to strip the doors, make sure the wood is in excellent shape, wood fill any gaps in the joints, and see what variegated or tone, the wood grain is. It may be that leaving a light to medium wood grain show thru and just sealing them with tung oil layers, if not a tinted sealant/varnish, would make them the prettiest given the dark ceiling, the dark finish to come, floors and the large oval windows. I would be excited to see how pretty their woodgrain may be...Lovely doors. IF the wood grain is nothing you care for, than it would be hard to not paint them a soft blue color such as this...it goes very well with Alabaster White, your trim.... Harbor Haze(BJ) with a Sherwin Williams paint variety for wood: (Satin or Semigloss, match the sheen of your woodwork, tho even a semigloss with satin trim would be fine on doors), (two coats) over SW recommended primer after the doors are stripped, IF you do not like the woodgrain....See Moreseeking advice about fireplace/awkward wall design
Comments (5)The architect did you no favors when designing that wall. Even before I read the previous responses, I was thinking much the same thing--sheetrock over the niche and visually minimize the basement door. I went looking for an old post on concealed doors. This isn't the one I was thinking of, but covers the same territory: https://www.houzz.com/discussions/2523382/making-a-utility-door-disappear#n=7 Basically, you can replace the door with something with no trim, painted the same color as the wall that will completely blend it. It won't be truly hidden, since you will still see the outlines of the door, but it will be much less obtrusive than what you have now, and will let your fireplace be the focal point it ought to be....See MoreAwkward, small Living Room with stone fireplace and front door entry!
Comments (33)For the time being at least, leave the stone above the fireplace plain. If at some point in time in the future you find art you truly like, the you could add that ... but don't just look/settle for something there because you think you should want something there. Like recliners myself. Consider a pair of them. As long as you leave the walk path clear between front door and back of the house, how you define your sitting space as being separate from the walk space depends upon what works for you. A room sized rug would be worth considering and/or a long runner in the walk path might serve the purpose. You could invest in a couple waist high shelving units and put one on each side of the room with the back to the living/sitting area and the doors, whether glass or solid ... or even open shelves ... facing the entry hall. They'll need to be sized and weighted and/or secured to wall/floor so they'll not easily tip over so you could also add a lamp on each one. Think: upscale overhead kitchen cabinet with glass doors and finished board on top set atop a built base. #5 of 20 https://www.thespruce.com/ingenious-ikea-billy-bookcase-hacks-4006865 https://www.wayfair.com/furniture/pdp/sarreid-ltd-library-bookcase-rfd3082.html...See Moretncatgirl
