Design Dilemma Storage & Closet

7' wide X 10' deep master walk in closet.

We are in the process of updating our master closet and need some help with choosing the depth of our cabinets. We will be using the IKEA PAX cabinet system and need help deciding if we want to use the 13 3/4" deep or the 22 7/8" deep cabinets. We will have drawers on either side of the closet with our hanging.

I like to plan what will go where. The hanging space has to be 22 7/8 deep and I am not sure what you mean by the drawers, do you mean under the hanging space ? I just did a Pax system for a client in South Beach I did all 22/ 78 deep except for one cabinet near a door that I did shallow so it did not feel so much like a tunnel coming in the door. IMO the deeper pieces give much better storage for most things . I like the pullout racks for shoes for sure. In your space you might need to go deep on one side and shallow on the other to give good walking space . I am assuming the doorway is in the 7’ wall so correct that if I am wrong.A quick floor plan will be all we need . My first step in designing a closet is to sit down and plan with my client exactly what they need to store in the closet. Guys are different than women in what they need storage for usually. My client has hundreds of pair of shoes so that drove a large part of the design. FYI planning a Pax is no simple task so take your time .

Thanks, Patricia. I am thinking about putting drawers in the middle of the 10' deep walls and yes, the door is on the 7' wide wall. I am thinking of doing hanging in all 4 corners at 13 3/4" and the drawers in the middle at 22 7/8". I think this will give me the most room to walk around. I also am going to put a 29" W cabinet with drawers and shelves on the back wall. I will try and post floorplan shortly if possible.

Your second plan drawing doesn’t show the actual hanging space. You cant have that u shaped hanging on the right. There is just not room Or it will be very tight And you can’t really turn corners with hanging, you lose the corner. The actual closet would probably have hanging on one side of the u and shelves opposite. with plan 2 i Think you have about 14 feet of hanging, and 8’ of shelves. with plan 1 you have 11 feet of hanging and probably 6’ of shelves. so the closet is bigger. with plan 2 I might consider swapping the laundry and hall baths.

That quote was not at all unrealistic, especially depending on what type of door style you chose. Ornate solid wood painted and gazed doors with dovetail construction upgrades will cost more than simple flat laminate fronts. Cabinetry is very expensive. You don’t need plywood boxes for closet cabinetry (or kitchens, but that’s another topic). The ‘furniture board’ melamine they use should be commercial grade and hold up very well unless you soak it. Most also have robust warranties. IKEA makes kitchen lines that many high end homes employ, and they are the de facto organization specialists. Their closet cabinetry is fine.

I agree about hating wet rooms. The tub would always be dirty. While you're remodeling, you might consider moving the closet to the other side where you currently show the tub, with a door directly from your bedroom. Then make another door all the way to the left into the bathroom. Take some space from the laundry area - you will appreciate it more in the main bathroom. You could fit the shower into the alcove where you have the laundry, with the tub and vanity on the long wall, straight ahead as you walk in the room, and tuck the toilet to the right of the bathroom doorway, behind the door, so it's not the first thing you see. You might also consider combining the shower and tub or eliminating the tub if you want to keep the laundry space. If you keep the closet location, another option would be putting up a wall between the bathroom and closet, reducing the size of your laundry slightly and increasing the closet size, accessing the closet from your bedroom wall. Either way, you'd want the vanity in front of the door and the toilet behind it.

Mark's plan is definitely a good one, but moving the bed can't happen. We realize it's a little tight with a queen bed, but we are okay with that and can make it work. She might not be a shoe maven but she would tell you this is the most important room in the house because it is also where she will do yoga. The 8'x8' clear space at the foot of the bed is the yoga space. Hence, where I've provided a sliding door that opens up to the forest and the large floor-to-ceiling east facing window with a mountain view. It's her retreat, and we can't mess with it. We weren't planning on having free standing dressers in the bedroom but I'm really loving the idea of built-ins under the stairs. This is such a great idea and why I love bringing questions to this site! I would want to keep the access to the storage space under the stair landing but the rest of that wall and the short wall next to the door would be available to use. Maybe some shelving on the short wall next to the door and two sets of drawers on the long wall? Here is a cross-section of that wall showing where the storage access is and where the stairs and stair landing are located behind the wall.

13 3/4 is not deep enoough for hanging .A floor plan would be great and also some drawings of what you are planning.

Hi Patricia. Attached is a top view with dimensions. There is no door on the closet just an opening 32" wide. I calculate that we should have around 34" - 36" walkway in the closet with the 23" cabinets. Thoughts?
