Where can I buy houseplants on the “cheap”?

I wish I found a way to bring my plants with me for every military move.
My husband gave away every one of mine without my approval, without my knowledge for our first move.
Where we moved to next, I replaced some.
Then we moved again. But hard water killed those I bought/was given as replacements there.
Moving next, to a desert killed others I bought/was given as replacements there.
Then retiring to an extreme hard water area killed those I bought/was given as replacements there.
So I gave up for a number of years & stayed with the half dozen generics I bought/was given as replacements, that lived.
But now I want to start again. However, looking online at OfferUp, Reddit, and a nursery I forgot the name of (not glasshouseworks), they’ve jumped hundreds in price in 20 years! Why would anyone pay $325+ for a rooted cutting of a variegated monstera is beyond my comprehension! 😳

Not sure where you are living, but I always recommend finding the nearest small independent nursery/greenhouse. You might be surprised to find their prices not that much more than the big box stores. But Home Depot, Lowe's and Walmart are always options. If you have Craiglist or Nextdoor, you could try posting there and ask if anyone has any houseplants they want to get rid of for free or any cuttings they may offer. I share with my neighbors all the time. If someone shows interest in plants, I am all about encouraging that so I like to share. Our neighborhood also has plant swaps in a park nearby. These have been very successful for giving and acquiring plants.

If you do want to order online, I can recommend a few places with prices that aren't outrageous and their plants are beautiful. Planterina is one. All her plants have shipping included in the price which is a great way to shop and know exactly how much you will be spending. Gabriella Plants is another that I can recommend.

I have purchased many a plant online. I usually shop Etsy, Ebay, and a few that specialize in hoyas. Sometimes you have to be patient to find the plant you want for the price you are willing to pay. But it can happen.

You order online?? I would never do that.

If you are looking for cheap, what’s wrong with Walmart, Lowe’s, the grocery store, etc?

I was going to order online.
Those I can only find near me are boring run of the mill types, some of which I already have.
In some of the other states, I found houseplants not normally sold in those stores. As if they were accidental deliveries.
Maybe I just need to be patient and search further outside the 20-mile perimeter. IDK

C&T was my first thought until I found out we can get them wholesale. We don't need anyone to take care of them because that was suddenly added to my job description. I don't mind, though, because I am going to pick plants I actually want at my house then they will need to be "pruned" when I want to take cuttings.

Too, I agree with the idea of putting them on a black leather or rubber cording necklace. Don't cheapen them with an inexpensive chain - when people get them, and the chain looks or feels cheap, they will assume the pendant is of less quality as well. Go to Zillow.com and enter the name of a state. In the drop-down menus at the top, select lots/land for the "Home Type" and put 40,000 in the maximum price. Sort by lot size to get the largest ones first.

I got my monsters Deliciosa as an “end-of-season“ clearance plant for $20 at my local greenhouse. It was considered an annual but they clean house before closing up shop late fall. I’m not sure your location but if you’re in a place that’s going into fall, now would be a good time to check your locals out. I also get a lot of “clearance”

plants from Lowe’s but I’m REALLY picky- it has to have no visible pests & at least look 50% viable before I’ll consider it. Nearly all of my landscape has been furnished w/Lowe’s clearance plants. Some didn’t make it but many, many more have survived & I am grateful! I also check out Home Depot & WalMart. Last winter I lost my precious euphorbia horrida major nova & NOBODY around here had one. Low & behold, I walked into the Walmart greenhouse & voila! There sat the only one & I snagged it. They usually don’t carry anything fancier than aloes, echeveria & sedums. And it is even prettier (uglier) LOL & bigger than the one I lost! Score!!

I know many ppl here order online w/great success but Im one of those people who have to see it in person, check the soil & plant’s condition before I buy. I may someday order online. It may be the only way of finding less commonly stocked plants like caudiciforms or variegated astrophytums.
