Please help. Concrete Job Gone Bad.

Help... I just had this poured less than 2 weeks ago and the large lower portion to the left is all covered in these big cracks already! The contract yelled at me, then quit before he poured my driveway because I wasn’t happy with what was happening here. I swear it gets worse everyday :( Plus it is completely attached to the back of my house.... he didn’t use any expansion joints or foam around anything. The list is long.... attached the fence post to my house practically it’s so close, control cuts were made way too late so it’s all chipping already, the color isn’t consistent throughout, the front walkway form is really wonky & slippery (I asked them not to seal it and they did), the patio was poured over the siding... the list goes on and on and on. And even worse, now they are suing me! I have called everyone under the sun and don’t know what my recourse is..... 😩 Help!

The only thing you can do is get him to come back and fix everything if he is not willing to do that, document everything, and start calling reputable contractors and put everything that was done wrong in writing, i.e lack of expansion joints, settlement, etc. because if all these issues especially there are a few pictures that show cracked slab due to settlement (if that's what it is) and if that's the case and it's only been 2 weeks after the job was done, most likely it will get worst down the road.

Other than that some of the cracks that you see are due to shrinkage which is common and if that is the case...most likely when having a camera close-up to take a snap-shot they appear worst than what actually is.

You’ve called multiple lawyers and none will help you defend the suit? How long do you have to file your response?

We used exposed aggregate concrete with natural flagstones scattered through it for our pool decking. The problem is that too much concrete was taken off in many places, making the deck very rough. It feels like you are walking on gravel, and it is almost impossible to walk barefooted on it. We thought it might even out some when it was sealed, but it didn't. So we need to find a fix. I talked with someone from Increte products (he has not be out to the house yet), and they have a spray on product that will basically cover up the aggregate, but it will not bond to the flagstone. Also, he says they will have to do some type of blasting to the surface to get the sealer off, hopefully leaving a good surace to bond the new product. I also am worried about too much thickness in another surface which will affect drainage around the pool. I would really like some sort of clear product that would leave the look of the aggregate, but fill in the deeper places. Does anyone have any experience with something like this or have any ideas? We have already had a large chunk of this jackhammered up and repoured, but it didn't look much better. Help!

I find myself in a similar position. We hired a local company to remove a 45’ x 8’ patio slab and do stamped concrete wood plank. We even paid an additional $500 for a pumper truck to bring the concrete over the house to the back to free the two guys up to work the 9 yards of concrete. Long story short, the final product is concrete that is over stamped (rough) on one side and a light stamp on the other. There are 4 low spots against the house where water pools and sits when wet. Its a covered patio on the lowest level so I think its only a visual thing. the one stair to acess the patio tips forward and is crooked. they also over covered the release on the step so its black compared to the brown on the rest. The over all stamp job has alot of flaws smudges and drags in it but Ii can get around it. My question is this. The entire job cost $6300 and I invested 18 hours of my own time helping load old concrete, help backfill dirt and remove forms. I’m not trying to rip anyone off but what should be the penalty? I don’t feel its bad enough to rip out but God willing I’ll have 30 years that I’ll look at it and know it isn’t right. All suggestions are welcome.

"Spackle" is filling holes by DIYers. This needs mudded minimum 2 coats which is considered drywall "finishing." The painter should not be relied on for that trade, but some may be artistic enough and don't mind doing the work for extra pay. The 1/2"+ filled gaps will probably invite a crack or two over time, as you get those anyway even when you put drywall sheet butts at window corners. LOL also I've never seen anyone go for the look of Venetian Plaster on top of colonial casing. Spillage on the baseboard heat as well. For such simple work, not professionals by any means.

The one thing that could have been done differently would have been to use a piece of solid surface material on the bench top (granite, quartz, corian). Easier to keep clean, specially with wavy lines going side to side and not in the direction that the bench should be sloped, which should be back to front.
