What do you do with your serger??
Comments (32)I have a Bernina 2000DE. I had an earlier model & traded it in because this was supposed to adjust the different stitches with a turn of the dial. You still have to fiddle with it due to the type of fabric, thickness, etc. When I'm in a sewing mood, I use it more than I do my sewing machine. I don't sew fancy clothes, so I sew all my seams with the serger, finish edges of hems, facings, etc. To use it to sew seams, serge & try & pull the seam apart. You may have to tighten the needle threads if the seam isn't tight. When you have a free day, practice, practice, practice. Threading is really easy with the color coded machines. Serge all the stitches on different kinds of fabrics & keep the samples & document your settings. Use different types of decorative threads. That's the fun part. Try all your stitches with the differential feed settings. That is one feature I absolutely love. I love to sew with fleece & you need it to keep the seams from stretching out & becoming wavy. Before you sew anything, test your settings by sewing the fabric on the crosswise & lengthwise grain. Make a note of the adjustments. Your library should have books & videos on serging. I have several & refer to them all the time when I want to play around & try something new. Some good authors are Naomi Baker, Tammy Young, Gail Brown & Nancy Zeiman. Read the troubleshooting section & learn how to fix any problems you have. If you get frazzled, you won't use it. A serger can be your best friend. If you haven't bought one yet, do as someone suggested & take the class. I learned how to sew elastic on, insert ribbon & all kinds of neat things. They're too expensive to leave in a box. Those of you who said you aren't using your serger, let us know if you give it a try & have success....See MoreWhat do you do with your masks?
Comments (53)Arapaho, I stopped bringing a purse to the grocery store for 2 reasons. One, it took up precious room in my cart, which I now fill. Two, I did not want to contaminate any more items than needed. I only bring in my phone, for Apple pay, a printed list, small wipes and sanitizer. First I carried them in a tote bag, but the clerks mistook my "purse" for a grocery bag and each time would start explaining that we have to use plastic. So then I looked around, and I always keep nice shopping bags for things i might have to carry, and I found this, below. This is my new "purse." I had to laugh to myself that I still carry a "designer purse." PS, FWIW, the FDA seems to think we should not worry about virus on surfaces....See MoreWhat issues do you always face when gardening at home?
Comments (30)Deanna and defrost, honestly, it's crazy the roots and rocks we deal with! If I am going to plant something, no matter how small the hole I'll need, I bring out a spade, a trowel, a pickaxe, a pair of pruners and a lopper. I usually HOPE that a trowel will be enough, maybe a trowel and pruners. But even digging a small whole, I usually end up deciding a spade will be easier, because 90% of the time the first thing you hear when you put the trowel in the ground is the unmistakble sound of metal on rock, lol. So the spade comes out. Then inevitably after you cut through the finer roots you find the "mother" root lol, at least an inch in diameter. After wondering where the heck it comes from and what it belongs to, the loppers come out. Pretty soon, by the time you've removed the rock(s) and roots that were in your way you have a three foot hole to plant a plant from a three-inch pot and then have to find soil to backfill the holes left by the rocks. Okay, I'm exaggerating a bit, lol, but not by much! The funny thing is, this happens in established beds, not just virgin ground. I had a friend who once swore that the thing that grew best in her garden were rocks. She called herself a rock gardener and said no matter how many rocks she removed from her garden there were always more that "grew" and just appeared, to replace them. I now think she was right! :) Dee...See MoreHow do you separate your clothes when you do laundry?
Comments (150)@Nancy in Mich - it's pretty hot here in Israel, and though the city I live in isn't humid (Jerusalem), other cities are pretty humid. I don't leave my washer door open, since our laundry room is so small that we'd have trouble opening up the door to the room if we did that. Sorry about your husband though - not sure I know how to convince him to ignore the tags :). @dadoes - I forgot about our washers heating up the water on their own. I will say that clothing gets a LOT cleaner with a European machine. When we first came here, I was astounded by how white my whites get. When my in-laws come they're always shocked by how clean my father-in-laws dress shirts get. They're all-cotton, fairly expensive shirts, and they come out looking brand-new. I'm not sure why there's a push for washing in cold water either. Our machines are very efficient - electricity costs more here, so they have to be. Honestly I can't even imagine washing towels and sheets in cold water. It feels so unsanitary. Maybe they're pushing it because washing in cold water doesn't get your clothes as clean... which means you have to buy new clothing/bedding earlier than you'd normally need to....See MoreJilly
