deereyebrow, my zone 3 summers generally are not overly hot, though there are exceptions. In my experience, if kept well watered, the large flowered types take the heat in stride and I believe it's no different for the sieboldii's As for other top favorites of mine, here's some in no particular order: Perle d'Azur Marie Cornelia ... a very nice small flowered white, though blooms on this one can be rather easily damaged Romantika ... a beautiful variety, though mildew prone Viola Barbara Harrington Prince Charles Victoria Jackmanii Superba Semu Princess Diana nhbabs ... snowfall in my region is rather reliable with constant coverage being commonplace, this is very beneficial when bitter cold descends. Other than being deeply planted (4 inches down and about 8 inches away from the cement foundation) the plants are not given any extra winter protection other than what snow might fall upon them. I do not hill them up with soil for winter, as the root zone is warm and this would cause tender new growth to push up through the mound of soil. As a side note, I've been growing clematis for nearly 35 years and have never noticed any problem associated with being planting near to a cement foundation, at least that's been my experience. Have you try your local municipal rose garden? We have one in San Jose, CA that has many old fashioned varieties along with hybrid teas. I volunteered many years ago trimming roses. I got some rose cuttings from them. We have hot summer(dry heat) with mild winters. Roses do well here. I have good luck with Bishop Castles-David Austin rose. Don't get Janet. I had it in a big pot and got toasted in the heat last summer. Bishop Castle has pink cup like flowers with many petals. It also have a wonderful old rose fragrance. It's easy to start from cuttings too. It has an arching habit and grows to 4' wide in 2 yr. I don't spray or use chemicals on my roses. I don't even fertilize them. They pretty much fend for themselves. Flagstaff, Graham Thomas, Abraham Darby and Crown Princess Margareta are good choices too. I don't have them in my yard but other people in our areas recommend them. See the link below. I also like Juliet Child(hybrid teas), angel face, Oklahoma. Juliet Child is a pretty yellow rose that looks like old fashioned rose and has a light fragrance. I had mistaken it for DA's Golden celebration when it bloomed the first year in my garden. It doesn't get as big and rambling as DA's. That's why I like it. Angel face and Oklahoma are very fragrant and good choices too. I hope this gives you some ideas. Hey Lena. I love sour cherries.. I call it my childhood fruit.We make jams from it and some tea and syrup with fruits inside .your tree looks good.I am unlucky since zone 7b does not really good for growing cherries.You can check rain tree nursery or trees of antiquity or rolling river nursery,I got couple trees from them.they ship it small though but very very healthy. 2 years ago , I got big size trees like 5 6 feet tall from Willis orchard ,they sell really big trees,at first it looks healthy but all of them got diseases and had to pull them out,so stay away from them and ty ty nursery...

Nurseries that I bought own-root roses from are: Regan, Burlington, Heirloom, Chamblee's, High Country Roses, Roses Unlimited. Right now I'm debating if I should buy State of Grace for $16 from Northland Rosarium ... shipping charge is $20 for 2 roses, but Andrew is excellent in customer service. Della Reese is wimpy as grafted-on-Dr.Huey (got from local Menards store for $6 as bare-root). It didn't even flower for 1st year, so I killed it. Grafted-on-Dr.Huey declines drastically after 2nd-year in my zone 5, so I no longer buy grafted-on-Dr.Huey unless it's flowering lots in a pot at local store. Very happy with the 6 roses I bought from Roses Unlimited this June 2020 summer sale, they are 3 times taller than the 4 bands I got from High Country Roses late May 2020. The bands from High Country Roses are so short that they got eaten by bunnies this fall. For dense & thick and alkaline clay like mine, just a bare-stick Dr.Huey-roostock doesn't sprout roots well, even when bought from Regan Nursery, such as Young Lycidas (grafted-on-Dr.Huey) died through its first zone 5 winter. The blooming power of 3 own-roots roses (large bare-sticks) from Regan Nursery is less than the blooming power of 3 own-roots roses (in pots) from Roses Unlimited. In the past decade of buying 130 own-root varieties, I find that alfalfa meal is a must for growth-hormone, it's worth making a special trip to the feed-store for a 40 lb. bag of alfalfa meal to mix with potting soil or to top my clay. Roses Unlimited recommends mixing 2 cups of alfalfa meal or 1 cup Mills Magic Rose Mix in the planting hole. Below is a tiny band of Crimson Glory (bought from Burlington) producing 4 bud/blooms after 1 month of purchase, fertilized with alfalfa meal.
