Noise in ABS vs. PVC vs PEX Piping

I'm looking for insights on how noise levels compare in these types of plumbing pipes. ABS was installed in our house, but the architect had spec'd PEX. We are investigating options to correct the issues and wondering whether a different type of pipe would provide a better result.

Are you talking about drain or supply pipes? PEX, copper, pvc, cpvc are typically supply, while ABS, PVC - drains. I doubt you will have PEX drains...

That's right. I was confused. The issue is with the drains, such are abs. We're trying to determine if PVC would have been the better choice and if we should change some of them to either PVC or cast iron.

On our remodel I told our builder I wanted copper on all drinking water sources. I rationalized that I spend enough time in places where I can't drink the water and I wasn't doing that in my own house. We are using PEX for the baseboard heat, PVC for waste lines, and copper for all supply. I know that PEX has its benefits but it hasn't been around long enough that I'm drinking from it (even though I drank from a green garden hose as a kid, I know it's somewhat irrational but it's my money). I don't think your choice will affect resale UNLESS someone finds out that it does leach chemicals and then it will be like Chinese drywall and lead paint - a big deal for some people but not all.

I called Delta again twice more and finally got an explanation. The problem with 1/2" cpvc and pex is "shower rise" - water comiong out of the shower when you try to fill the tub -- I explained again that I am installing a shower only, they then said this should be no problem even with 1/2" cpvc. They said cpvc has a "waffle" imprint on the interior that can cause flow problems if 1/2" is used from the valve to the tub spout and cause back up to the shower, if 3/4" were used here it should avoid the problem and if there were only a shower there would be no problem. They said there is no other problem with cpvc and Delta products even though the 2nd rep I spoke with said that Delta recommends not using cpvc with any Delta products (the third rep said this was definitly not true). I guess customer service is no different than anything else - it is only as good as the supplier!

Be sure learn and comply with the local code(s). Your city may differ in some ways from the state code. Codes specify piping materials by the applicable standard. Here it is ASTM D 2661, ASTM F 628, CSA B181.1. Your code may differ. I do not know the code for your area and the big box stores are not good sources for code references. The standard will be printed on the pipe. Pining must be installed with the standard labeling showing.

I guess I should have asked where the riser is going to be located. Try to avoid living areas. Hopefully in a chase between a closet and bathroom or something similar. You would need at least 4 layers of 1/2" drywall to come close to the density of a 4" cast iron pipe. There are products made specifically to soundproof pipes but I haven't used them or other insulation products in this situation. You mentioned 30%. How much is that in $?

If you are having issues with a pipe already built, it might make more sense to build something around the pipe. Cast iron isn't silent but better. The best plan is using cast iron but also hiding it if possible in a closet for example.

I doubt that PVC vs ABS would be much different, but cast iron should be quite a bit quieter. However, cast iron is much harder to work with and is more expensive, so its generally not used any more except in commercial buildings.

I would add spray foam insulation around the ABS to stop it from vibrating, and add rubber isolation material between the pipe and anywhere its strapped to wood. When the ABS pipe vibrates due to water coming through it, the sound is amplified by the vibration of any wood trusses or studs it is touching.

I don't know - cast iron downpipes are pretty common near me. Not cast iron for everything - just the downpipe between floors. I feel like ti cost about $50 more.
