mantle shelf- hould I go custom or try piece together something
Comments (0)Hi Folks, I have been reading through the forums a lot lately. We have a major home-remodeling project going on. I have been tempted to post a question through out the project, but then better sense prevailed, that made me search the forum first and I ALWAYS found the answer. So Thanks! to everybody for being so generous with your experiences. However, I think I may have a question that may not have been asked earlier. We have a brick fireplace. I need to add a mantle to it. I was thinking of just the mantle shelf originally, but I am wondering now if I should add skirts and legs to it as well. Our mantle width is 84 inches and the most it can go to (because it is kind of set in a little bit) is 90 inches. I looked at Home Depot and Lowes website and the biggest mantle shelf they have is 6 ft (74 inches). Do you know of any brick and mortar store that has 7ft mantles? I googeled for mantle shelves and found www.mantelsdirect.com. Does anybody have any experience wih this website? Can you please share? Are there any other such places that you have used? Also, when ordering a custome mantle, should I consider the size of the brick wall as the lookout width (smaller, lower width of the mantle) or should it be the overall width (larger, upper width of the mantle) I then went back to Home Depot website and am wondering if instead of ordering custom shelf, maybe, I can get a 6 ft shelf and then add skirt and legs to make up for the extra foot needed. Any thoughts, suggestions, information you can share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,...See MoreNeed a new fireplace mantle, help, please
Comments (8)A good contractor/remodeler should be able to design & build a mantle for you. My husband (a contractor) does these jobs all the time. Thing is, a lot of GOOD contractors (except my hubby of course) rejects these small jobs. I DO think you need a beefier mantle for sure. And, on a design note, I would paint the backs of the bookshelves & perhaps add doors to the bottoms (that contractor/remodeler would be able to match the bookcase wood perfectly) You may also look at people listed under "cabinet makers" or "woodworkers". ~Jeana...See MoreMy3dogs and others, I need help with Mantle
Comments (32)Congratulations, lyban! It's wonderful! I like the print better than the clock. Glad the lamp if gone. Love the orchid addition and the gourds. This feels more like the rest of your room. I'd be tempted to keep the print in the frame since it's a nice water scene and place your daughter's photo on your piano or the side table by the hearth. See what you think by switching the outward facing right duck with the one by the orchid. I agree with 3 dogs that a horizontal mirror may work but a round may be better, although you may not need any once you change the scones. IMO you don't need to fill the space or emphasize the height. I too have 20' ceilings in this house but prefer to keep the eye grounded to human scale. Even when we built our last home with more sane 12+' ceilings I kept the profile of art, furniture low. Nor do you need to bounce light since your room gets lots of wonderful light. I think your mantle may be too high to reflect back a nice image since you apparently take these photos from a catwalk on the upper floor. These are the reasons employed for using mirrors when not needed to check appearances. That being said, you may love the feel of a mirror, but get the sconces up before deciding. Again, great job!...See MoreHELP... I need help picking a lighting style and finish
Comments (3)That's a fairly dark gray. I hope there are lots of windows for natural light. If you select satin chrome light fixtures they will be the same value as your walls and blend in to the walls. I would contrast with fixtures in an iron like or blackish bronze finish Designers do not typically recommend lights on ceiling fans. The quality of the light is typically not flattering....See Moremissa215220
