Paint Design Dilemma Exterior

I need help choosing a stain for my cedar house.

Help! I chose slatestone gray from Owens Corning for my roof color that is being redone now. What colors should I use for the house stain and the garage and front door colors? I like a modern look and I also like modern farmhouse but with cedar I'm not sure how light I can go.

Gray goes with most anything. What are you trying to achieve? Can you google and post photos of houses you like?

Were your Homes' shakes back-primed/stained? How well insulated/vapor-barrier equipped is the home? Often-times, the enemy is "within", meaning lots of moisture-transmission OUT thru the siding! It sounds like you are wanting knots etc to show, so you are using a semi transparent stain. The only way, you could go lighter would be if you used a solid color stain, and then none of the knots would be visible. Solid color stain is almost like using paint. I love the color that is on there now.

Take into consideration all of your existing fixed elements like cabinets, trim, etc. I’d steer you away from those grey floors regardless of the size of your house if you have any natural wood stained trim or cabinets.

"The contractor recommended using Minwax gel stain in color mahogany and then seal it" Find another contractor, MInwax gel stain in not something you want to use for exterior beautiful cedar in any way shape or form.

Love your house! We recently moved into our 1970s shed style house, which is similar, but unfortunately the previous owners painted all the cedar white. So please don't do that! Google images of Sea Ranch--those are the inspiration for homes of this style. Most are either a fairly natural cedar or a light weathered grey. If you went with the grey, a very dark charcoal similar to the darkest color in your roof would look nice on the garage, like this:

This house used black and brown stain mixed together.

According to the owner, "We sealed and prepped it with product called Eco Wood and then followed a special mixture non-equal parts of transparent stains of black and brown. Pre treated one coat, then after installing the siding we did another application."

Here is one using Sherwin Williams exterior opaque stain - Beechwood Gray.
