I totally agree on the butternuts, because they taste wonderful, resist squash vine borers, and store just great. However, for pure pie perfection I would have to vote for a good, dense buttercup -- the round green ones with a button on the bottom. If I had to face Bobby Flay in a squash pie throwdown, there is no doubt that I would start with a beautiful buttercup. They are much bigger plants than butternuts, and they develop so many roots along the stems that they often keep producing after borers infest the primary crown. Hi Leisa, I have never experienced a "siamese squash" (that's what I call them) until this year. I'm not sure what causes it, but it's weird. You never mentioned what variety yellow squash you are growing or if it's straightneck or crooked neck, but I would say that if it is 6 inches long they should be ready to pick. That can depend on the variety though. As far as having a green tinge to them, you got me. My straightnecks and crooked necks are pretty much yellow from the get go. Once again, it may depend on your variety. Of course, you can always prepare one up and sample a tasting to see if it tastes right. It looks like it has downy mildew. It also seems stunted for a squash. I wouldn't count on a crop from it.

That looks like it, alright. From this site: http://www.reimerseeds.com/white-cushaw-pumpkins.aspx "Also known as the Jonathon Pumpkin, White Salem Pumpkin, and White Cushaw Squash. Introduced by 1891 by Livingston." Several sources have said it is native to the southeast U.S. and was used by the Indians. I've grown them 3 or 4 times. If you grow them 2 years in a row, the insect pressure is bad the second year. They resist it pretty well, but get a lot of scars from being bitten. When I plant several vines, one of them usually will have green stripes on its fruit. The vines will climb up on anything they find. This one got into a grape arbor with muscadines on it. The one on the right looks like it has the faint green stripes. The one wearing the hat in my previous post weighed 43 pounds. I canned 12 quarts of pumpkin from it.
