I'd paint the door the same color as the roof, but a little more intense. That will tie it together, but make the roof seem less bold. A contrasting color will make the red look redder, another deeper or brighter red will make it look browner, or whatever the undertone is. Search this forum for "foundation plantings" or "curb appeal" for other threads on the topic to learn what the considerations are. Once you've researched a bit, you can ask some specific questions for input. Here is a link that might be useful:

Gingerflower, You're in for lots of fun (and work!). :) I think the first thing I'd do (well, it's not actually the first thing I did because I'm too impatient, but....) is some soil testing to see what you've got as far as pH, soil type, etc. It will also tell you if you need to add organic matter. Are you close to a town with a Cooperative Extension office? They can provide info on how and where to get your soil test kits. I agree with little dani...mulch, mulch, mulch to conserve moisture and cut down on weeds. I am on the coastal plain of NC and Salvias are one of my favorite because they're happy in my sandy soil and hot summers. There is a Salvia forum on GWeb, you might have seen it already. I'd get the soil tested by your local extension service or state university, and then amend the lawn as needed and reseed the bare spots. I'd take this photo to a local nursery where they have knowledgeable employees and ask for suggestions for low-maintenance, shade or part-shade plants that don't mind wet roots--if your flooding problem is near the house--and plants suitable for your zone. While there, you can look at annuals and perennials and see what you like! I envision a garden bed that extends a few or several feet along your driveway with a nice curve that tapers off near your front door, outlined in mondo grass or something similar. While your trees are gorgeous, thinning them will allow more light to come in and help dry your lawn--and help with the longevity of your roof. If you have a big budget, you could look into regrading your lawn. Trim or weed the plants on the left side and fill in gaps. Other suggestions:: the driveway looks beat, so considering resurfacing. Consider hiding your garbage cans on the side of the house with a privacy fence or bin. Paint front door, perhaps the blue of the shutters--but the shutters are way too narrow for the windows. You didn't say what color your are considering for the trim, but I think this blue looks fine. Finally, if you have enough room to pull your car all the way into the carport, considering getting a garage door.

@Ranee Randby, unfortunately online information indicates that gray/green color was a custom mix. These are some gray/greens from Benjamin Moore. The Herb Bouquet looks similar. Here are a couple other shots of the house.
