Trim - Am I Being Too Picky
Comments (20)I don't think I've ever seen seamless mitered corners. What you have looks great to me. The limited Garden Web opinions fall to the side of too picky Limited? I didn't actually count, but I think upwards of 10 people said it looks good. Which means there are countless others that agreed and didn't bother to respond since it had already been said. Not one person agreed with you on here. How many people have you asked on-site? And remember that many friends and family may tend to agree with your opinion solely because they have no strong opinion and agreeing with you is the easier thing to do. Internet opinions can be tough to take because they are usually more blunt, but they are typically unbiased. Comments (9)Thanks all. The pipe on the sink wall couldn't move short of pretty major structural work, unfortunately---it's the vent pipe and it's running up a load-bearing wall that is not open, so opening it would have triggered another level of permits (right now our building permit is just for non-structural modifications and walls)---so those outlets had to stay put. I'm actually fine with that, though, they'll be three inches off the counter, which seems fine---actually a bit higher than where the vertical outlets were in the old kitchen, since they had the same constraint. The new outlets they put in are, I think, 42 inches to center---the sink wall outlets are 40 inches to center. So we could probably get close by just putting them horizontally at the bottom of the existing opening. This wall has no sink or stove, though, so it's unfortunately the one spot where there's no splashing or other danger to low outlets....ah, well. They will be for the toaster oven, mixer, and other tall things, though, so they'll likely be pretty hidden regardless. The main reason to leave them alone, from DH's perspective, is just that he wants the work finished already. (We are playing GC for this ourselves, so one of us has to work at home whenever contractors are here---thus it would be nice to be done so we can move on to the next contractor!) @hydrangea_luvr, wish I had some progress pictures (or some progress!!) I took a few the day of demo, but am hoping to take another round next week if the electrician really can wrap this up so we can have our rough inspections. (He'd better, since then the plaster crew comes in to patch the plaster so we can paint the room over Thanksgiving weekend.) I have a feeling it will suddenly start to come together once the plaster goes up and it feels like a room again....See MoreHelp! Am I being picky with my cabinets? Or should I be pickier?
Comments (27)Kitchencraft has been very good about replacing questionable doors/trim for me, so you shouldn't have a problem if HH requests a new one under a "warranty claim." I have the darker colour (expresso) and one of my cover panels had to be reordered. It came in a slightly different stain colour than the rest, and they just sent another which matched better (different lot numbers I guess). If the "drip" is in a noticable spot I would get them to reorder. As for the crown, I do agree it's not that noticable, but I'm sorry to say it is a bit funny/weird, especially for how much I know you paid for the cabinets. Sorry. They should have ordered different height cabinets for your fridge surround to allow for a bigger crown frieze (I think that's what it's called) or placed your other cabs at a higher height so it would not be as much of a difference. I truly feel terrible writing this to you, but I have a feeling you suspect it's off anyway. It's not bad looking... just for what you ordered it should have been less noticable, even if your ceilings are off. I also know what it's like to be near the end and just want it done (like I think your DH is)....See MoreAm I being picky - or is this a sloppy interior paint job?
Comments (6)I don’t think you are being picky at all. It looks sloppy to me as well and if you are not completely satisfied with the contractor painting basic walls I would not trust with cabinets and exterior. Suck up the lost and move on..... I recently moved into an almost 4000 sq ft home and I hired a painter for 1 room. He asked if that was all I needed painted I told him no but I want to see how he paints the 1 room. Learned from past paint jobs....I don’t care what the portfolio looks like they could be photoshop... some painters just paint they don’t patch or do 2 coats unless specified. I said all that to say I have taking losses too, had to have things done over but to me it is worth it for me to enjoy my castle...See MoreMichele
