Remodel Dilemma: Can't use washing machine outlet wall box - what now?

We are remodeling our laundry room in a 50s ranch home and found that due to code, we can't drain our washing machine into a wall box unit. Our drainpipe is not 2". Apparently we have to drain the wash machine into the sink, which requires a much larger utility sink than we had planned - and presents a design challenge. The washer/dryer are side by side both under a countertop next to the sink. (Photo shows a similar example.) How can we creatively finish this off, without simply having the washing machine outlet hose drilled through the countertop and attached to the side of the sink? This must happen commonly in remodels. Input appreciated. Thank you.
