Backyard design flow ideas

Hello! My husband and I love to do DIY projects but have been reluctant to do anything to our backyard. We have some ideas of what we want but don't know how to make it flow. We know our first priority is probably redoing our back deck but we are unsure if we should keep the same shape. Having a slope doesn't help either. We also have a big area in the back that we don't use. We would love to put pavers, a fire pit, and a greenhouse eventually. Then there's the landscaping, and making it all flow together nicely but also affordably. We are in no rush to finish this as we enjoy working on our home together but we would really love any ideas to help us get started.

I can see one or two ornamental trees by the garage on the left side of the house. They would also help providing shade.

What are the shape/size dissatisfactions with the deck that you've acquired? At least it looks finished so I don't know if I'd make it the first project. IMO, what makes your yard seem lacking is the lack of landscaping. There's no "foundation" planting around the house. and the yard perimeter planting seems incomplete. The trees are nice but it would look a lot nicer to have a "lawn" of groundcover below them, as opposed to a sparse, dying turf area. Turf is only going to do well where there is adequate light. At minimum, it should be solid, weed-free mulch. But eventually, you'll want groundcover so you don't need to be replenishing mulch on a periodic basis.

Ohio must be really flat. It's hard for me to imagine you not having anything to look at around your area for inspiration. Come out to Cali for a vacation. Everyone has a sloped lot, but small space, so the retaining walls and landscaping are essential to get any joy or value out of your property. Start by determining what you want to use the yard for. Are there multiple uses? workshops storage sheds gardens play space outdoor kitchen seating entertaining swimming pool Make a simple plot plan layout and designate space for each function. Give ample transitional space for people to flow freely. Plan to build the retaining walls without moving too much dirt. You can create nice flat terraces by working with the existing grade. It is not really a good idea to bring in or take away very much soil. it could cause erosion or drainage issues with your entire lot.

Thank you, you’re very kind. We like the pavers and occassionally have needed to adjust a few - primarily due to tree roots. The property began as dirt when we built in ’95/‘96. So, time is your ally with any landscaping. The patio was built in ’98 as a DIY project. Took all summer. My speculation is that your settling is a consequence of backfill not having been compacted before the concrete was poured. That is no longer an issue. So for speed and expense you might want to consider a stamped/stained concrete patio. Speak with a qualified concrete installer. If you have and questions someone here can advise.

What do you mean by "turf"? A grass lawn IS turf.......... And the only reason you cannot grow it is because the existing space has not prepped for it properly and watering is likely an issue. That would be the same for any species of turf grass you chose. Or do you mean artificial turf? That might make more sense where you have serious water shortage issues, like in Sacramento. The design considerations would be exactly the same as if you were planning a real lawn. And you will still need to prep the base properly before installation.
