Serviceberry tree help - half of it looks dead - what should I do?

Hello, last summer I planted a serviceberry tree in Colorado. It seemed to do well all of last year and the beginning of this year. Recently I noticed that a large branch appears to be dead? I am not sure what I should do here - do I chop that branch off, leave it, do something else, etc. It seems like its going to look really weird if I chop that branch. I should also mention that people said there was a late frost in the Spring time this year, and it caused a lot of trees all around town to look really messed up - e.g. a lot of trees aren't growing much leaves, especially upper leaves, and they are growing a ton of suckers instead. I don't know if this caused this branch to get weird. It looks like there are dried berries on this branch, so I don't know at what point this happened, or why.

Some additional info: I have a drip system that waters everything every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday morning. It waters for an hour, then waits an hour, then waters one more hour, then is done. I recently checked the PH of the soil and its at 6.8.

The whole thing looks very poor - if it was a lot fuller last summer then something has happened to it since. Perhaps the dead twigs are due to fire blight but otherwise it will not be very easy to tell looking only at these pictures.

One thing that can be seen is that you have buried it with the cobbles. Those should be pulled back so that the crown of the tree is at soil level.

first ... you ALWAYS remove dead parts .. and you remove it surgically ... not chop it.. especially if you need to be on a ladder to chop it .. lol ...

but the dead parts are the least of the problems with that tree ..

pull back the rocks.. and show us the root flare... if its not there .. pull back the soil until you find us.. and snap a pic ...

what is your native soil .. does it drain ...

how did you plan tit ... did you bare root it.. to find out if roots were proper?? ...

did you amend the planting hole ...???

drip irrigation is rarely proper for a tree.. you water deeply and let near dry .. before you water again .. on new transplants in my MI ... i water about once a month if there was no rain ... there is no tree that needs watering every third day or so ...

is there landscape cloth under the rocks.. if so.. remove at least a 6 foot circle around the tree to allow proper movement of AIR and water in the soil ...

once you do that.. you can dig 3 to 6 inch holes around the tree to FIND out about moisture at root depth ...

i might also wonder about how much day heat the rock retains.. deep into the night .. when most plants get a recovery period ....

again.. the dead part is the least of the trees problems ...

it is incredibly stressed... it is not hungry.. fert is not a response at this time ...

The old saying "if it swims and looks like a duck, AND it quacks, it IS a duck" applies here. As one who lives in your part of the country, yes it is supposed to be dry. It looks like your tree is growing very close to a redwood tree, which will have roots close to the surface up to 100 feet from the tree. The redwood would not be growing there if the soil water was not close to the surface, thats the good part, the bad part is the redwood is also very good at extracting the water from the soil. The tree is where it is and if you want cherries, prune the tree when dormant to remove dead wood and open up the canopy to get what sun that gets through the redwood. For most of northern California cherries are a hit and miss crop and you may also have some pollinizer problems. There are a dozen or more different kinds of serviceberries, both shrub and tree. Some shrubs get to 4ft, some to 25 ft. Tree forms get from 10 ft to 40 ft, depending on species. You will need both latin names of the shrub you bought, then you can search that name to see which one you have. The most commonly sold serviceberry is Amelanchier arborea, usually a multistemmed shrub that gets to 20 to 25 ft. It can be trained as a tree but will tend to send up root shoots. A. laevis, Allegany or smooth Serviceberry is a nice tree form getting to 30ft, if you can find it. Return to the nursery, ask for the latin name and ask them how big it gets. Half dead plants from freeze what to do?

Not meaning to offend, but after reading these posts, it sounds like some of you are thinking that a normal winter dormancy in some of the plants are "freeze damage". I think Eureka mentioned how bad the daylillies look. True, some are evergreen, but even those can suffer leaf damage in freezing temps, but more are deciduous and do die back in winter, but the roots don't freeze so they aren't killed and will come back again with spring warm temps. Those things even survive in the midwest and colder zones. I think we're all spoiled by having such a long growing season and having so many evergreen plants in our gardens, that when the cold knocks them into dormancy, we often think they're dead from freeze. Often, this is not the case. They may look terrible, but leave them be until spring and you'll be surprised at what pops right back. True, many of us do push our zonal limits, and some plants, esp. the more sensitive tropicals, might not survive, esp. if they aren't established. Even then, in a milder climate zone like the SF Bay Area, many of those will come back again from the roots. A few examples... In the freeze of 1998, (19F for over a week...my pond even stayed frozen!) my 15 yr. old lemon turned black and defoliated, but as soon as it warmed up, here came new foliage. Hibiscus will go deciduous, but comes back again. Bananas often turn black, but push out new growth in spring/early summer. Personally, I'm a zone pusher, but I usually try to plant the really sensitive things close to the house, under eaves or evergreen trees or surround them with hardier plantings that offer a bit of protection or warmer microclimate. So, that's just my 2 cents worth. I think people worry too much and think plants are "frosted" that are just going into normal dormancy or think sensitive plants are "dead" when they're just experiencing temps too cold to keep their foliage. wanda

How does the top look? That wound looks like it was from last year. The wood is weathered grey and the callus tissue has begun to heal over. Maybe a buck rub, maybe a frost crack..., in any case it looks nasty but if the top looks healthy it will probably eventually (after a few years) heal over. Do not apply any paint or pruning sealer or anything. If the top is showing signs of stress, such as branches dying back, I would probably just replace it, especially if it is a specimen tree in your yard.

Hey guys, thanks for the comments so far! And yes when I got the tree last year, it was the last one available in the area, and it looked crooked and bad, so they gave me a discount on it. HOA was on me to finish my landscaping so I just went with it. I've been trying to straighten it out with the straps.... it was a LOT more crooked than it is now haha!

Its really bad clay soil around here. What I did was I removed the wire cage and burlap, unclumped the roots around the perimeter slightly, and sat it directly ontop of the clay soil. I then built up the berm around it with mostly planters mix from a local landscaping supply.

Specifically where would you cut to remove that dead part? And would you just cut it with a saw?

The original photos were from 2 weeks ago. It looks like there is some new growth on it. I took 2 more photos showing this, as well as the trunk/crown. It looks like the soil swelled up slightly around the crown... I remember the crown sticking up above the dirt slightly more I thought:

I don't think that we have yet seen the root flare; more soil needs to be gently pulled away from the base of the trunk. Embo said that the rocks have to be pulled back, and if that is some kind of landscape fabric under the rocks, that has to be pulled back too, at least six feet away from the tree.

In addition to our drought this summer, it's been through two 70 degree temp swings, 1 last October and again in April. Your tree is still alive and that's something! I agree you need to pull back the landscaping fabric and make sure it's being adequately watered in our ongoing high 90 degree heat wave. I'd not fully rely on your drip system, physically check the root zone moisture and hand water it once a week if it needs it.

It can be rather optimistic to expect healthy plant growing in dead soil. Your soil is dead, no organic matter, no soil organisms under all those rocks and asphalt. Uncover as much of it as you can and add organic mulches on regular basis. BTW Amelanchier doesn't like clay soil too much, it likes good drainage. Watering it too often on such a soil is not good idea.

I have an autumn brilliance service berry in its 2nd year planted. It has struggled this year, but finally seems to be getting going. It had a lot of die back though. I’m in a new build in Northern Colorado, and the soil is clay. Rock hard, hole doesn’t drain for a week clay. My first serviceberry died and when I pulled it out, I found it was sitting in water. The top few inches felt dry, and down at the bottom of the roots was foul water. So it drowned. I water my new one WAY less, and so far it seems to be hanging in there. Serviceberries also tend to get chlorotic, so be sure to be proactive to keep it from happening. I’d cut the dead branch, and as the others recommend and pull back the weedcloth and rocks, keep it watered but not drowning, and hope for the best.
