Los Angeles USDA zone and what to grow

My son's family just moved to the north side of Los Angeles from Chicago. None of us know anything about this climate. My gardening experience is all zone 5b.
They are renting a house built into the side of a hill, near the Hollywood sign and bordering Griffith Park, with 3 extensive decks. Due to the sharp slope, I don't think it makes sense to plant anything in the ground.
But there are large empty planters they could use. There is already one lime tree and another citrus with no tag.
What other dwarf fruit trees could grow in that climate? Flowering shrubs or vines that will handle pots?
Thanks for any guidance you can offer.
