Discovering new relationships

djacob Z6a SE WI

When I was walking through the garden yesterday, I noticed some of my hostas that are blooming now have very similar flower heads. It made me wonder if they were related. The hostas I have with these buds are: First Frost, Autumn Frost, Blue Ivory, Paradise Joyce, June and Magic Island. So I looked each one up in the Hosta Database. Here is what I learned.

First Frost - sport of Halcyon

Autumn Frost - (guessing a connection here) sport of First Frost - sport of Halcyon

Blue Ivory - sport of Halcyon

June - sport of Halcyon

Paradise Joyce - sport of Halcyon

Magic Island - sport of Catherine - sport of Halcyon

I knew June was related because I separated Halcyon from it last year, but did not know of the other relationships. I then came across the word “Tardiana” and learned that this refers to the entire Halcyon family. I am sure there are many more relatives. Then I came across the Plants Galore on HL home page. Boy what a little wondering can do! Many of your experts I am sure know this, but it was fun discovering it on my own!!
