Air conditioning unit placement--please help!!!
Comments (14)I hesitate to make this comment, since it sounds like you are too far along, but perhaps it will help someone else. This problem is one of the reasons that we decided to do a geothermal system. I know of a historic style house (a Deerfield house to be exact) that was built in the 80's with a geothermal system. When the well went dry during a drought (it was an open loop system), the homeowners put in AC condensers. It totally ruined the look of the house. There was no good place to put it and it was noisy. Their experience made me think about the placement of units and ultimately decide against them. My story does have a happy ending. Incorporating geothermal into my new build inspired the owners of the Deerfield house to redo their geothermal system and the ugly units are gone! They are back to beauty on all sides and no racket....See Moreair conditioning unit placement outside new home--help!
Comments (9)The HVAC contractor is correct that if you go beyond 80 feet there is some loss of cooling capacity. However you can compensate for the loss by increasing the diameter of the vapor line. Even at 250 feet with the properly sized lineset you may see a loss of only 3-8%. Not a big loss. It will you cost more money for the extra lineset materials. If you install the condenser near the patio, then select a unit which has the lower amount of ambient sound. I have the Carrier Infinity 24ANA7 condensers in 2 and 3 tons. The sound rating is 68 and 70 dBA respectively. I think they are quite, but then again I don't sit next to them for long periods of time. Some manufacturers offer an accessory sound blanket which may reduce the sound 2-3 dBA. The builder's grade units typically have no built in sound installation and are typically the loudest. Is it possible to plant shrubs between the condenser and patio? It will help baffle some of the sound....See MoreNeed advise on replacing our 5 ton air conditioning unit
Comments (11)I have not been checking recently, but as of a couple of years ago, there was little objective data that indicated that UV lights could do much of anything to help with allergies. I think the return on expensive filters is similar. That would be when added to a system that is functioning well in a home that is kept clean and outside air infiltration is controlled. Of course "allergies" does not really tell much of the story. The most important thing in dealing with allergies is to identify the allergens. If you don't know that, you are stabbing in the dark. Humidity control is going to be very important in S. Florida. Another issue is duct placement and leakage. If the ducts are outside of the house envelope (crawl space or attic) and leak, you are blowing out conditioned air through supply duct leaks causing a partial vacuum in the house. That sucks in hot humid air through any leaks cut in the house envelope. Hot humid air then hits cool surfaces and causes condensation and fungus growth. I have not looked at this for a while, but check it out: My House is Killing Me! The Home Guide For Families with Allergies and Asthma, by Jeffrey C. May, Johns Hopkins University Press, 2001. For building and AC issues in the hot humid South, FL universities have some good resources. So does www.buildingscience.com . If you are going to look at one thing at that site, make it this: http://www.buildingscience.com/documents/insights/bsi-015-top-ten-dumb-things-to-do-in-the-south/?searchterm=top%20ten...See Moreconnecting to heating / air condition unit
Comments (9)BY me being a female, I can't really explain it, but these are the items he told me he would need: 50 ft two underground wire, 25 ft condure pipes, and 5 three quarter elbows.I think I need to find someone else. First they said they was going to run the wire from the outside of the house along the wall near the ground. I told them I didn't want that. Their cost for doing this is $125.00. I do they you'll for your advice....See MoreMini-Split Warehouse
