Anyone Recognize This Beautiful Antique?
Comments (32)Here's a rose Euphrosne with some leaf close-ups for comparison. I wasn't having any luck figuring out if there were nine leaves, though. Euprosne is pink. Looking back at the mystery rose photos, I see a few thorns and a tendency to form clusters which might get better if the plant was larger and in the ground. I looked up Bobbie James which is a wichurana/multiflora cross, but it didn't look right. Those leaves look shiny to me, like a wichurana. I'm wondering if the mystery rose has a scent, because wichurana is scentless, usually, isn't it? You know, I've never seen a multiflora in bloom. Sometimes you find some rootstock coming up in somebody's yard. Never does a thing. Never dies, either, without some effort. Makes me wonder. There are some plants you try to grow here, they'll finally bloom about a week before the first frost. Dr. Van Fleet and American Pillar bloom here in July. Here is a link that might be useful: Euphrosne...See MoreAnyone recognize this golden/pink cherry plum?
Comments (5)Oh wow. That's great. I'll try to get back out there and bring a leaf sample home to compare to yours. The tree I found is actually in a state park, but way off any trails. It's kind of odd because I think someone might have intentionally planted a small orchard there many years ago. There are two huge (20+ ft) pecan trees (small pecans - see below) plus the plum and several trees that I think might be almond, or a stone fruit that is no longer producing....See Moreanyone recognize this "pass-along" plant?
Comments (6)Wild petunia can actually work as a decent ground-cover in heavy shade where it looks a bit less ragged than it does in sun. Downside is that it volunteers worse than salvia coccinea. We're pulling our shade experiment because of the added weeding effort it creates throughout the other shaded beds.... and any pots that get within "spittin'" distance. Seeds from the sunnier alley bed mostly get washed down the storm drains, so will keep them for now. It's a host plant for 3 or 4 butterflies which is a main reason we encouraged it, but have not seen any signs of activity here after several years. Here's how it has been flowering since late July in nearly full shade:Covers fairly well... and, if you look close, can see the green anoles like it... which suppose might explain the lack of butterflies:...See MoreA group of Hybrid Musks...anyone you recognize?
