Kitchen update ideas
Comments (6)I agree with new light; new counters in a light, but not tan, gray or yellow, pattern or solid; Don't paint the cabinets - just clean them really well; and I would replace the pulls and knobs with larger, polished nickel pulls. If you don't like the rope trim, the molding on top of the cabinets is usually not really hard to replace. Paint the molding that will yellow with paint that will not - there is no need to make choices based on that!...See MoreNeed kitchen update ideas!!
Comments (3)Photos that show your entire upper cabinets along with a floor plan/measurements would be helpful, but generally speaking I think new counters, cabinet hardware and backsplash could go a long way in updating the look. How is the function? The layout (what I can see of it) wouldn't be to my liking, but if a full remodel isn't in the cards any time soon (or ever), you might as well do what you want to improve the appearance....See MoreKitchen update ideas needed
Comments (22)Wow! Thanks for all the comments and ideas. To start with, for context, this is a small concrete block 1950s house in a great area. I love it, it's adorable-- but it's a challenge. We recently got the foundation repaired, cracks repaired in all the walls, and the plumbing replaced. Now I'll try to answer all the questions. First, the floors are stained red oak and we put them in when we did because it turned out to be a minimal cost when the rest of the house was getting the heavily worn 70 yr old floors sanded/repaired/refinished. Also, we wanted them to match the rest of the house. I can probably buy a can of the stain to have on hand. Behind the refrigerator and stove wall is concrete block, then a small garage that is used as a project room. The opening on that side goes down three steps into a laundry room/ pantry that also has the only entrance to the garage from the house. The currently blank wall is plaster and lathe, about 5 inches thick with a living room on the opposite side. That living room also has a small dining room that you can see through the arch window opening in the kitchen. A previous owner opened up between the living room and the "dining room" (originally a bedroom). But load bearing columns had to be left. I'm concerned that opening up that wall in the kitchen will create an open floor plan, which I'm not a fan of, and even more columns. Last, it don't think that we can possibly block off the doorway because it's the main access into the kitchen for groceries etc. It would also make the entrance to our home incredibly tight. People commonly step into the kitchen when coming in as group. This is all to say that we have had a tough time coming up with a way to move walls and doorways that didn't create as many problems as it solved, though we have had several architects and kitchen designers etc come out to the house over the years. I do like the idea of putting cabinets along the blank wall. We've had a cute kitchen cart over there for years....See MoreKitchen Update Ideas?
Comments (17)@Alyssa Fernandez this is a close up of the granite, I asked my husband to send a pic, not the best! backsplash is off white/beige colors. The bottom line is we are spending about $8-10K on the entire house to paint, remove wallpaper and old window coverings, re-do some floors, lighting etc. We upgraded electrical panel, made some repairs. The cabinets do have a raised panel. Everything adds up quickly cost wise as you know! We are going to rent it out for 6 mos - 1 year and it will rent out faster and at a higher monthly than if we did nothing, so the costs are worth it especially since a lot of it is general things that need to be done and will not be changed or torn out when we remodel - such as flooring and paint....See MoreRelated Professionals
