Update Ideas for a Saltillo Tile Floor Masterbath
Comments (11)Palimpsest, Very beautiful tiles! I will have to see if they fit in the overall budget. I really like the idea of the quartz counter (I know she wants low maintenance & durability) pulling a color from what ever the accent tile is. Sweeby, I know she loves turquoise, so she may want to pull some of that color in there. The mosaic is beautiful. Her kitchen, which has the saltillo too, actually has a bluish granite with some cobalt blue accents in the backsplash. I like the warm cream color too. I think that is what she is wanting to repaint the vanities. She did mention stripping the floor to ceiling cupboard and painting it an accent color or even doing something wood toned with it. You all are great! I am already feeling like she has so many more options. Hopefully I will get some photos from her this next week to add. I may just browse through the quartz again......See MoreSaltillo tile floor and creamy cabs, will you post pic?
Comments (5)I have Saltillo floors and will have light gray painted cabinets. After much searching I have chosen Tan Brown granite because it has a combination of gray, cream, and the clay Saltillo color on a black background without being too sleek like a black counter would look. The backsplash will be slate. Best to avoid anything that looks too rustic. I would not do a matching tile on the counter, that would be way too much red for me. Grays seem to work with the tile really well....See MoreSaltillo Tile floors anyone?
Comments (30)15+ years ago when we were building out patio we used Saltillo tile because that's what everone was using, it was very popular. This year when we decided extend the tile I found it difficult to locate. When I finally did find it I asked why and they told me people don't want it anymore so many stores have dropped it from their line. We're going to bust it all out next year and put in a more durable tile. It's probably best to replace it anyway since it have cracked badly over the years. The stuff is not as strong as other materials, especially when it hasn't been fired. A lot of the Saltillos that were sold years ago were just baked in the hot Mexican sun. Can't imagine how poorly they held up. We chose a fired tile but still it cracked, cracks so long thye run the length of the patio. I would never recommend using Saltillo for outdoors like we did. Indoors I think it looks great if you're going for the Hacienda look but then you're pinning your home's style down which may not appeal to prospective buyers. Like the gals say on TV, "it's very taste specific". I used to seal our tile outside until it became such a chore cleaning and sealing every year, eventually I gave up on it. I would imagine the sealer would last much longer indoors. Even if I decorated my house in a soutwest style I would probably opt for a porcelain tile instead. Saltillo's I know are very uneven in their thicknesses. My BIL had it in his kitchen, he ended up replacing it too....See MoreSaltillo floors + white kitchen = ?
Comments (22)we moved into a house 9 months ago that has saltillo tile. (we are moving again in a couple of weeks. we knew we were only staying in this house for about a year while we shopped around for the perfect house to renovate or build) anyhow, we didn't want to spend too much on updating the kitchen, so we left the existing granite tile counters and travertine backsplash, but we painted the kitchen cabinets a pale gray green blue by Martha Stewart called pudding mold. this looks really nice with the tile, so I think white cabs will as well. you may want to add some warmth with a beige grout line in your subway tile to tie in the warmth of the floors. also, there are some white macuabas slabs that have some goldish peach veining in them that would tie in the terra cotta of the saltillo. you can make a beautiful kitchen, but don't choose ALL white. carrara, for example wouldn't look good with saltillo. but there are plenty of white marbles if you shop around that will have some orangey veins to tie in the floors. there's one called calacatta michaelangelo that i think has some honey veining. also, you might want to use pewter hardware or even black to add some warmth. pewter seems raw and organic and looks really nice with the saltillo. here is what we did with the kitchen in the temp house. keep in mind that we left countertops and backsplash and appliances knowing that it was temporary. but painted the walls a cream color and the cabinets pudding mold made a huge difference. http://www.fsbobr.com/website/listings/listing_photos_fullscreen.asp?listingid=392060&fsboclientid=66607&rid=5367 Here is a link that might be useful: our house listing...See Morerebasheba
