Fireplace modification (framing and foundation questions)

Clint

We're making a modification to our fireplace below. We want to remove the stairstep above the mantel, narrow the overall width of the whole thing (including getting rid of the old TV space), and making it one seamless column from floor to ceiling. We then want to mount our TV over the fireplace and put a stone veneer on it, so we need to make sure it will hold the weight. Looking for ideas/thoughts on a couple of things:

1) How would you build and support a suitable frame to make it strong?

2) What concerns should we have for anchoring this into our slab foundation? I believe it is a conventionally reinforced slab.

Thanks!
