I’m chomping at the bit

Call it pandemic fever but I am desperate to start transplanting perennials, shrubs, container trees, groundcovers... I don‘t care if they will look wretched this season but I don’t want to have to water daily either. When can I start doing what? Please describe your order of operations and cues for going ahead. I’m in zone 6b NY..

In general, spring and fall, when the weather is cooler are the typical time. That being side, you can do this work anytime, but you will have to water, sometimes daily, in the heat of summer. Your choice.

the key for me.. is night temps ... when it gets lets say cold.. at night ... say.. under 60 ...

then the plants have a long recovery period from whatever the day sends at them ... so even if it hits 80 for a few hours during the day.. it would cool rather quickly in the evening ... and even if it gets hot.. the soil... under mulch... stays cool ...

it also means.. not as much water is pulled from the ground during long hot spells ...

so if you move things.. water them in real good.. and mulch proper.. and then wet the mulch ... it might be weeks.. before you lose moisture at depth.. where the roots are recovering ...

thats how in works in my MI ... which has to be very equivalent to you ... how different can it be.. the further south you go ... other than what month it happens ...

very infrequently.. there is drought in november.. and a good drink might help .. which means you cant put your hoses away 10/1 .. like so many peeps ... but this is rare ...

one caveat ... in the north.. its hard to buy mulch in fall ... either bagged or bulk ... so if you think you will be using a lot.. secure it now ... dont wait until you cant get it ....

Hey all, If you look real close, you can see the chains hanging from the ceiling. All the light fixtures can be moved up and down. I've been thinking about how to reflect the light and like your white foam insulation idea, lilydude. they have the added benefit of providing a bit of insulation in a cold basement, I'll bet. Have you ever attempted to wrap them with aluminum foil for even more reflection? digdirt, I have the 5/8"X5/8" blocker and the 2"X2" blocker. You germinate in the small ones, move them to the bigger ones, and move toms to the 4 inch ones as they grow. The first two sizes were 22.50 and 29.50 at the Jungs in Sun Prairie. I've only found the four inch size at Johnnys for $95. The idea is to be able to start a huge amount of seedlings in a very small area. This is my first year blocking so I'll find out how well they work. Eliot Coleman swears by them. He makes three sided flats out of plywood. I kinda shy away from wood for seed starting but maybe I'll end up making some anyway. This is my fifth year starting seeds. I hope to get better year by year.

Welcome to the Cottage, Grant! Love your area of the country, especially some of the quilt shops. You can keep the rain, though. lol! Your cottage sounds like a fun project. Lots of work but the rewards of restoring it will be so wonderful. Btw, you may want to check out the Smaller Homes forum for some inspiration. A few of us from here hang out there, as well. It's for those of us in the under 2000 sq. ft. category. I'll link you to it. And as for your pics, you might want to open a PhotoBucket account. Last night I was chomping at the bit to put stuff on the shelves. DH suggested "how about just the light stuff?" So I moved in the cereal boxes. I had second thoughts this morning and took them back out. I've decided to wait until next weekend (which is just over 2 weeks since the second coat). It will be a hard week for me. I'm not good at delayed gratification. Cotehele, you couldn't possibly put an adjustable shelf pantry in that amazing kitchen of yours. It just wouldn't be right! Kevinw1, I seriously thought about painting my pantry a very pale gray or white and doing the shelves and trim in the blue/green color of Julia Child's cabinets. I was just worried that it might be too busy or that I might get tired of it. I certainly don't want to have to repaint any time soon. All that cutting in would drive me insane. I do like the idea though. Desertsteph and warmfridge, the light is vintage and I found it on the internet from a lighting place near Ontario. Fixture by fixture, we've put vintage lighting back into all of the rooms in our house. I've found most of it on ebay...lots of good fixtures out there if you're willing to put in the elbow grease polishing (me) and know how to rewire (DH). antiquesilver, thanks for the suggestion to wax the shelves. I have a can of butchers wax and will give it a try once I'm sure the paint has cured. breezygirl, regarding shelf spacing, there were a few items that I knew I wanted in specific places, and then my carpenter and I just figured out how to divide what was left over evenly. I wanted to put my enamel fish poacher on the very top shelf (you can see it on the top shelf in the before picture). I can't reach it easily, so I might as well store something that I like to look at that doesn't get used. The next two shelves will hold my old cooking magazines in magazine storage boxes. The shelf with the electrical outlet is for the toaster oven. I had him make this shelf a little higher than needed in case I have a different toaster oven down the road. The two shelves above the toaster oven and the two shelves below are all the same height (10 1/2") which is tall enough for any single item I buy and tall enough for two cans stacked with space to spare. Probably more detail than you wanted, LOL. honorbiltkit, the pantry has a pocket door (salvaged), but I keep it open most of the time. I like to look at food. : )

Thank you everyone for your very kind words as I work thru my biggest 'oops' of this kitchen reno. I'm looking at it straight on and ugh - oh well. I'm moving on since there's not much I can do about it anyway. I spent most of the other night - an all-niter, completing my glass insert. It was going to be installed the next day - NOT! I finished it about 6am the next morning and had appointments starting a 9:30am. I was exhausted. I get a text before heading out, contractor won't be here today. Aargh. Did my appointments and came home and took a long nap. Prepped the oven and griddle. Made breakfast this morning on griddle. Need to find a good cleaner that can be applied while still griddle hot/warm. Impatient waiting to cool Contractor installed my glass insert today. It's really simple. But effective. There is not a lot of color in the kitchen permanent elements so this adds some much needed color. Can you tell I'm scared to commit to color??? LOL (And I never successfully 'finish' a space). In person the glass piece has a lot of texture and strong color. Nothing wimpy on this piece, it just doesn't show up in cellphone pics. Contractor did a nice install. I could 2nd guess some things but I'm *not* going there! Everyone enjoy your Friday nite.

When we plant - spring or summer - we dig a fairly large hole and fill it with water, and let it drain out before planting. After it drains out, if the soil still looks dry - as it might with summer planting - we refill the hole with water and let it drain again before planting anything in the hole. We don’t mulch in the beds, only on paths, relying on dense planting to function as much so it is important to us to ensure the soil is moist before planting, especially in summer. While fall is considered a good time for planting, I have lost more things planted in the fall than things planted in spring or summer! Cool nighttime temperatures that start happening around now are useful though.

I just bought four Winterberry shrubs the first of this week. l'm going to wait until a couple weeks or first part of Sept. to plant when hopefully it will be cooler. Right now the ground is so darned dry anyhow, digging a hole will be a chore.

Usually I don't have a problem planting in the Fall, shrubs or perennials.

If you're in 6bNY, you are probably not far from me, and I won't be moving or planting until mid-September, as much as I want to rush out and move them NOW. Our ground won't freeze until December or so, so the roots will have a long time to get settled, even if it's October. Hide your shovel so you won't be tempted.

this is when you do all your prep work ... so its easy in fall ...

in fall.. the usual rule is 6 to 8 weeks before ground freeze ... which is be done mid october ...

and in spring.. 6 to 8 weeks before the heat of summer hits... which for me.. is late may.. which coincidentally is last frost/freeze time ...

this crossed my mind earlier ... do it when its sweatshirt season ... you may need to take it off as the day warms.. but you better have it on in the morning.. and in the evening ... wonder if i will remember that new rule... lol ...
