Comments (84)WE LOVE EGGPLANT! I am so glad I found this thread. Great recipe idea's. I have grown Black Beauty and Ichiban. This year I am growing Iciban and something similar in white (not sure of the name....sorry)......I like to make eggplant parmesan with the big fruits and we grill Ichiban with salt and olive oil until soft. Then sprinkle with parmesan cheese.YUMMMY!!! That is our favorite use. I also use the recipe from "Fannie Farmer" called Eggplant caviar. Also very tasty. I have used eggplant in ratatouille also...prefer grilled. This year my eggplant have not been so productive but are covered with ants. If I lift a leaf, there are many insects and ants...lots of ants. I am not certain of the other insects because they are so small but I assume they are aphids but they are underneath the leaf. Not sure if I zhould worry....suggestions will be appreciated. I sprayed Safer but they are still there a couple days later....See MoreHelp! What is this gross yellow foamy/spongy stuff?
Comments (66)I have the same nasty blob that shows up a couple of times a year (in the same spot) on my gravel dtiveway. If I leave it it dries out and falls apart when I shovel it away. If I remove it right away it is a slime consistency. The top a bright orange and the interior a brighter orange. It varies in appearance slightly. This last one looked like popcorn that had been tossed in a bright orange sauce. I'm glad to read the previous comments as I too thought some animal was vomiting on the driveway. The closest plants are about 6 feet away so it does not seem to be related to plants or mulch as some have suggested but who knows. If anyone has any suggestions as to where a person could learn more facts about this fungus I would appreciate that information....See MoreHave a look at this photo.....
Comments (34)Jay, Have you always used Oak leaves for mulch? I was under the impression that they made the soil way to ascidic, making it not a suitable mulch (unless composted for a year). I noticed that what changed and when you noticed the problem were only 2 ingredients, did you have theese tested? If it did contminate the soil, wouldnt growing a cover crop for a year or 2 remove the contaminents to the point that they are more dilluted? (in that let it grow , then mow then remove all together to a spot where it could compost for a few years) the more you grow and remove the less contaminents left in the soil. I hope I explained this properly....See MorePurple/Dark Edges of Eggplants After Transplant?
Comments (6)Yeah - I did probably have them outside about a week too early, but I am fairly south. Past my frost date but also sitll not as warm as I'd like. I took a bit of a risk because I was just so dang anxious to get them out of my guestroom closet. However, the vast majority (6, compared to this 1) have transitioned fine. Do you all feel that if it is trauma-based, time will heal it and it can still produce or am I better off pulling it and putting something else in?...See Morejuddjonas
