The investment company is responsible. Or the owners of the unit at the time the investment company was doing the renovations, if the investment company didn't own the unit. I agree with Unit C that the HOA should take some part in this and work with the three affected units to resolve the issue with the investment company. If the HOA is unwilling to act and the three affected units cannot get the investment company to pay to repair what they damaged, then I think all three units should go into together on the repairs. It really isn't Unit C's fault this happened. They may not care about getting the intercom fixed--they were clearly happy buying the unit without an intercom. I don't think they should have to bear the full cost of the repairs for a mistake someone else made. Of course the HOA doesn't want to deal with this. It will take time, money and most likely a lawyer to get this resolved. I'd read through the HOA rules and regulations very carefully to see if you can find a clause that will force them to take action.

momcat -thank goodness someone knows what I'm talking about! Ok - so from the outside it looks like this. Except on the inside the tubes go pretty deep. In the upper unit there is a tube but we tried yelling in between them and no luck, probably due to the rusted out portion in the lobby. Thanks for your help - this is a really difficult one to track down, and unfortunately at one point someone decided to do a moroccan theme (I know it makes me want to pull my hair out) in the lobby and basically ruined any chances or restoring mine due to their 'creativity'.

Ok I discovered something new here. I disconnected the keypad, and only powered the Doorfone. The Doorfone unit works on DC power and unlocks the lock only when both the positive and negative door strike contacts are connected to the electric lock. It is when I only have the red door strike contact connected to the lock that it makes noise like it is working, but does not open the lock. So my question is can I add the negative door strike contact from the Doorfone to the Diagram A from above? Would I simply add this to the negative connection on the doorlock along with the diode? Or do I risk a short somehow? Thanks again for all the help

We removed ours. The cost to replace it -- and then to upgrade the wiring for the new systems, was ridiculous. We figured an ipod and speaker would be better, and you can get wireless speaker systems that will probably give you better music quality, more flexibility and be cheaper that the intercom. We patched the wall in the kitchen when it was done and are doing the other rooms as we repaint them. The front door had the doorbell, so we had to do that one at the time also. We installed a new doorbell and mounted the button to a small wooden plaque I bought for $1 at Michael's.
