The TV already pulls a lot of focus, so I would remove the items on the mantel. Both of the lamps look too small to me. A pic of the sofa wall would help. From what I can see, it looks like the wall above the sofa needs larger art. It should be hung no more than 5-6 inches above the sofa. I'm sure the pros here can offer some helpful ideas regarding the cabinets, lamps and everything else.

My first thought and I agree with taking down the items on the mantel. In my very untrained eye, the cabinets flanking the FP just seem too small to me. Have you thought of painting the fireplace?

I might consider some tall art to add above both cabinets on each side of the fireplace that can give the cabinets a larger presence. then add larger lamps.

Agree that your existing lamps are very small for the job they need to do, e.g. balancing the wall arrangement.

The blue on the chests is a bit bright, but I'm guessing you might have been looking to add some spark to your room.

• I got rid of the too-small lamps and replaced them with picture lights mounted over colorful framed graphics.
• I painted your brick a neutral gray because the red, yellow & blue combination just isn't working for this room. I replace the TV and added a soundbar below for better sound.
• To finish the area I added a colorful canvas over the sectional & mounted the drapery higher. I recolored it in gray to tie in the new fireplace color.
• I would also consider replacing the area rug because the style is a bit 'sweet' for a family room.

Have you thought of taking the TV off the fireplace and putting it in the corner? With your sectional, people should still have a good view and you could put a pretty piece of art on the mantle. (Poster from allposter.com)

With this particular wall, I’m not sure imposing symmetry is the best route. Maybe a tall secretary on one side and a ficus tree on the other (as others have said the other elements are individually so big the current pieces look wee in comparison). If you decide to keep the two blue cabinets, I’d add two big pieces of art above each, sort of stacked on top of each other, and I wouldn’t attempt to find four of the same size or four of a series, I’d buy four big interesting pieces and embrace the wall as it is.

We are so accustomed to seeing built ins flanking a fireplace it is a challenge to entertain something new. I love the way their blue matches your ottoman. Perhaps a third hit in the drapery would help. I would not paint brick EVER and certainly not gray!! That would defeat the boost the blue is giving you. Plus gray is over and seems to be agreed it drags a space down and we have enough dragging us down these days!! Your vaulted/sky lights are amazing. You are blessed to not have to play trickery with hanging the curtains oddly above the window. I do think you need more height flanking the fireplace. Not sure lamps make sense. No one is sitting there so why lamps?

I know you didn't ask but I would either paint the fireplace or the wall color to coordinate better with it. You could do an earthier toned neutral wall.

Thanks everyone great ideas here. I think there is consensus that the lamps are too small/don't work! I love the art ideas. I'm not married to the accent cabinets (I painted them navy but they came out too bright for my liking), so would happily replace them with an alternative.
