Sad, boring, clashing kitchen

Hi all,

I’m hoping you can help me with figuring out what to do with my kitchen. We bought our 1960s home 3 years ago. The previous owner was a DIYer gone bad, so we’ve been going room by room to fix things.

My next project will be the kitchen. I hate it - the faux-wood (and very shiny) floor tiles, the off-white subway tile backsplash, the laminate cabinets... It all clashes, and at the same time is sad and boring. If I could, I would knock a wall out and completely gut it to make the open concept kitchen of my dreams, but we have a new baby and endless projects in this house so we realistically can only do minor/moderate fixes right now.

I thought about replacing the floor tile with a dark grey tile, and replacing the backsplash with white or grey subway tile. My concern with the white backsplash is that it might highlight how the quartz countertop (blanco maple) clashes with the cabinets (which are looking more peachy and less grey than I thought they were). I thought that a grey could pull it together, but am not sure.

If it helps, the rest of the house is white/light grey with mid century modern/eclectic furniture and accessories. I’ve attached a photo of the dining room which opens out from the kitchen (but we are getting a black sliding door installed where the windows are next month) as well as the living room which opens up to the dining room.

Any ideas are appreciated! Thanks so much.
